Baines is fast becoming an Everton legend, imo. Usually you have to win stuff (or in Duncan's case terrorize and flatten people) to get that accolade. Baines is one of the best full backs to pull on the Royal Blue and he's got decency in buckets it appears.

But what a disappointment he turned into from that point on: lost Pienaar eventually and couldn't hack it defensively (found out badly, in fact); got a titty lip on when he was denied his chance to go to United with Moyes; then he sniped behind the scenes running to the press to pull down the manager he'd blamed for not allowing him the United move.

Hibbert was a defender pure and simple, yes. Baines without Pienaar fell between two stools and couldn't get forward AND defend.

You can see the way he gets Belgium playing as a team rather than a collection of individuals that he knows his stuff.

He took an ale house team like Wigan and beat a good Everton team and then City the best team in the country in the cup.

He was very good for a short period of time going forward with a player alongside him of the quality of Pienaar. He's never been a good defender though.

In a better era for Everton he'd have been cover for a LB that could defend. No more than that. He was Hinchcliffe class.

If baines really threw his toys out the pram like you say hed have been sold like the many others before him who have replicated what you claim baines did. Baines was in a bind: local, and desperate to keep his reputation as a loyal servant. He didn't push for the move but he certainly didn't need any excuse to carve up behind the scenes the manager he blamed for blocking his United move. His briefing the media against the manager was shameful. Martinez never deserved that and he manipulated the fans against him.

Unforgivable even for a legend that is, and he will never be one of those.
