Heart not in it to sit on the bench for another season. You can only praise him for that when we have so many players happy to take their millions and give nothing back in return. Have so, so much respect for him, Everton through and through.

Gutted. A legend of this football club. I thought he is going to play for another season or two for another club. Probably he loves Everton too much so he decides to retire. All the best for any future endeavour Leighton!

That's a real sucker-punch. Probably one of the best LB's of the Premier League era when he was at his best. Such a shame, he's had to go out like that. Really let down by the [Poor language removed] around him.

A bit gutted, but fair play to him for going on his own terms and not hanging around for another season just for the money.

He could have hung around and drained another years wages but has too much dignity. Hopefully he can a job as a pundit. Not sure he's the coaching type.

Awful feeling for him to have go out on such a crap note but of course he'll always be remembered for other things. A truly outstanding footballer and role model, always kept his head down and can never remember him hiding during a game, not once. Obviously he's decided he's had enough of the game and wants to do other things, god bless and good luck. Hopefully we see him in the stands with us from now on.
