Sad? Take a look out the window mate. That's sad, not the retirement of some overpaid footballer who's cash will secure him and his a lot better through this catastrophe than we can us and ours with what we have.

In pure football terms. A sport played for our enjoyment. If we don't appreciate that and lump it with everything else, it doesn't become special or a release any more.

When it comes to legendary status at a historically successful club like Everton, I think trophy wins are important, but in rare cases, for truly exceptional talents/character who light up the darker times, I think you have to make concessions. Leighton Baines would be one of those rare cases for me.

Watching him and Pienaar down the left at Goodison for years was easily the most fun I've had watching Everton and the proudest I've been of the players we had at the club. It's no fault of Baines' that few of his team mates could match his ridiculous talent and help the club win some silverware.

2009-2013 He was in top 3 LB in the world. Defensively a little bit dodgy but going forward he was a menace to teams. Its a shame Moyes took 18 months to make him a regular. Lescott did a decent job at left back but he would have been better playing through the middle and Baines was a better left back. I think if Oviedo hadn't got his injury he would have replaced Baines but would not have been as good as peak Baines. He definitely should have been replaced as a starter a year earlier than Digne was bought. However given the gaps in our squad I actually now want him to stay another year whereas last year I would have released along with Jagielka.

Lot of time for the close-ups in the replies

Leighton Baines will start on the bench against Bournemouth this afternoon amid fears this could be his last game for the club.

Everton were, this morning, still trying to convince the full-back to accept the offer of a new one-year deal but the growing concern was they were fighting a losing battle.
ooer.

A brilliant servant to the club. The best left back of the premier era for me.

He was so unfortunate not to win something here. Baines, Jags, Cahill, Arteta etc, they were so unfortunate to play in an era when Manchester United and Chelsea had the best sides arguably in the entire Premiership era. And we ran both those sides close in that era from 07-09, and but for a few catastrophic injuries, could have had some silverware.

Whilst single-handedly keeping the ice-cream economy afloat? Folk have been knighted for less.

I have a silly anecdote to the whole ice cream thing concerning me, Rom and Twitter...wish I knew if it was all coincidence (highly likely) or not; sometimes I don't think so as there were two other things that happened during his early time with us that were so specific that it's always made me wonder if he was actually reading my Tweets.

If LB could confirm that the ice cream incident was something Rom started, it'd be a good sign it wasn't just coincidence.

Tomorrow will be Baines' last day as an Everton player.

He was very good for a period - yes.
He was a good defender - no.
He was a player a first team squad place was wasted on for the last 3 seasons at least - yes.
He was worth the £47M he's pocketed since 2007 - no.

Let it go. It’s not his fault BBS was found out.

Feel so sorry for Bainesy, he's wasted his career at this dump of a club. He really could have been something, and won a lot.
