Leighton Baines

Time for Oviedo to revive his Everton career. Galloway is a good kid but starting every week is probably too much too soon for him right now, plus Bryan did fantastically well the last time he got a proper run in the side and completely fit.

Really strong interview from Baines about Stones. The sort of interview the captain should be giving IMO but that's another story.

John Stones and Leighton Baines
Everton’s Leighton Baines has backed manager Roberto Martinez’s view that the transfer window needs to be changed after seeing how John Stones has been effected by Chelsea’s pursuit of him.

Stones had a transfer request rejected by the Blues in the final week of the window after the Premier League champions had seen three bids turned down for him.

The Londoners embarked on a very public pursuit of the 21-year-old throughout the summer despite Goodison chiefs insistence that the player was not for sale.

However, Stones has played in every minute of Everton’s five games so far this season and Baines has been pleased with how the youngster coped in difficult circumstances.

He said: “The manager’s touched on it a few times that the window shouldn’t be open and I think pretty much everyone in football would agree with that.

“It’s just a source of entertainment for people on the outside now and it doesn’t help anybody in the game. We’ve seen it first-hand with John and we’re just glad the club took the stance they did and we’ve been able to keep him.

“It has been relentless, particularly for John. Seeing him first-hand on a daily basis, it’s been difficult for him to deal with. He’s still a young lad.

“It’s dragged on for such a long time and he’ll be happy now to see the end of it. “John knows how to play football - he’s being doing it all his life - [but] he hasn’t had to cope with situations like this before.”

The situation had similarities to Manchester United’s attempts to sign Baines in the summer of 2013 when ex-Blues boss David Moyes upset his former employers by declaring he’d have found it hard to keep hold of the England left-back if he’d still been in charge at Goodison.

With Stones, who has another four years remaining on his current contract, staying put for now, Baines believes the Yorkshireman should concentrate on his football – starting with Saturday’s first Everton game since the window shut – at home to Chelsea!

He said: “It’s John who has to pick himself up now, dust himself down and move forward, and we’ve supported him all the way through it as a club and inside the dressing room.

“I think there’s a misconception sometimes - people think that when a footballer hands in a transfer request they do it and go off and play a game of golf or whatever.

“But it’s actually been such a tough thing and, as a young lad, you do lean on other people a bit more for advice at these times.”

Baines added: “I think the true reflection of John has been shown on the pitch - he’s conducted himself brilliantly in the dressing room and he’s performed well in all the games.

“That’s when he’s being himself, that’s when we’re seeing the real John Stones. That’s the guy we all love here.”

A good watch, people talk about the sums players like Stones earn and think that justifies anything that happens to them. The money is relative once you're used to it, the mundane trails and life changing decisions people have to face still apply to you. You just make them from a more comfortable chair

Anybody happen to hear what he said or have a link to a recording?

Just listening now. It'll be on the bbc player in a few hours time I suppose. Interesting stuff.

Injuries, transfers, penalty taking decisions, last seasons slump, Roberto (the players were excited about getting RM even before he came, he can be tough when it goes wrong etc)
