Him and Pienaar both have the much needed ability of taking the ball in tight areas, sucking defenders in and getting a pass off. They make space for others.

Agreed. Pienaar is like a magician down near the edge of the box, especially on the 1-2 with Bainesy. And Ozzy practically wills his way in to create scoring opportunities. Underrated players, for sure.

Did anyone really say that about Phil Neville? Ossie has took a pummelling from fans but only on forums. At the match he's always been well supported. Not a world beater by any stretch but he's been a fantastic player for us and still had got that knack of popping up with some fantastic goals. The 2 he has scored against West Ham this season have both been superb.

I have remarked on this before.

Ossie is generally well received at the match.

The abuse he receives on here is not indicitive of his reception at Goodison in my experience.

I agree.

When people discuss things these days, there either the best in the world, or the worst they've ever seen. Osman is neither of those things. Seeing as he scored one goal in a 2-1 win in our latest match, I'll say, as in the OP, that he's a useful squad player.

Not the best, far from the worst.

So what you are saying then is that he is absolute tosh, with the odd good moment every 30 games?

Think that is a very reasonable and measured response.

Sir.

Always been a talented footballer, just missing that extra half yard of pace and physicality.

I thought he was our best player for the first half on Saturday, started fading in the second but he was still involved in the move that led to the winning goal.

One tidy goal and suddenly the defenders come out to play again. Months go by where he offers absolutely sod all and this thread goes untouched.

He was absolutely crap against Sunderland. Needs to go in the summer like the rest of the deadwood.

You are aware he's been injured for a large portion of the season aren't you?

Yes but how many games has he played this season overall, about 20? How many of those has he been any good in? Maybe half a dozen? I can't stand it when people come out in force to defend him after he does something decent but are nowhere to be found after he's absolutely tosh like he was against Sunderland and United. It's not like when people argue over players like Howard, Lukaku or Barry where everyone is consistent with their criticism or support. With Osman it's like people only defend him when it suits them.

Agree that he needs replacing due to age (not due to months of offering nothing) but the problem is if we look at Martinez's past transfer performance he will be replaced either by a one dimensional defensive mid or a one dimensional winger on loan.

What we need to do is spend about 20 mill for two long term first team replacements for Osman and Pienaar. They should be able to play anywhere across midfield and have the skills none of our other midfielders have that Osman and Pienaar do, the appreciation of space, timing of pass, agility in tight areas, creative assists, passing and controlling with both feet.

That way Osman and Pienaar can stay in the squad as cover for injuries and 20 minute cameos. At the moment the team is absolutely screwed without them so a long term injury to either is bad and when they are fit they have to play 90 mins. We need to do what Moyes did when he went and picked up Arteta and Pienaar for the first time. Low cost high creativity.

I dont think any of that's true.

People defend him because the critism of him is far to extreme. For example he played well against Utd like everyone else did in that fine win and he had a decent game against Sunderland before tiring in the second half but for some reason you've decided he played "tosh" and that's either through a constant anti Osman dislike from yourself or a terrible memory.

It seems to have escaped your attention that since his return from what could have been a career ending injury our form and general play has improved almost beyond recognition from the team that staggered listless from game to game while he was out.

No ones claiming him to be a world beater and like most players he has his limitations but he's a vital ingredient to how our team plays. Without him or Pienaar we've got no one smart enough to open teams up with a smart pass or some quick thinking, he brings people into the game with his constant recycling of possession and keeps us ticking over when where under pressure. We could do with a younger version and it's likely to happen this summer but Osman will still be around next season and we'll still be a better team with him in it then out injured.
