Leon Osman

Leon Osman is one of the most technically gifted players I have seen play for my beloved blues over the 40 plus years I've been going to the game. From the first time I saw him in the 1998 fa youth cup I thought he was fantastic. One thing I was told before he even made his first team debut was that he may not play 1st team football, not because of his size but because of a multitude of injuries he had suffered in his early career. The guy who told me was a mate of mine who worked at the club and in particular with the youth setup, he said that Leon was a great lad and so talented but he could be knackered because he was too brave at times and would for example stick his head in the way of a shot or boot while on the floor.

He was not blessed with speed or size and yet never shirked a challenge and was in my opinion criminally under rated and unappreciated by far too many of our supporters. David Moyes left him on the right hand side far too long where his lack of speed was often exposed, when he played in the centre his natural balance, ability with both feet and reading of the game shone through.

Two games in particular I remember him playing centrally and showing us what he was capable of; Fiorentina in the home leg where he was absolutely fantastic and for me our best display under Moyes against Manchester utd in Feb 2010. The BBC match report is linked below and Leon was rightly picked out as the games outstanding performer in what was a greatime display against a top end Utd team, not like the dross they've had since SAF left. I remember coming out of the ground on each occasion asking who thinks Leon is too small to play centre midfield now!!

I for one am glad to have seen his carer at Everton and would like to say thanks.

The season before last I saw some stats on distance ran in games for the blues. Leon had 8 out of the top ten distances covered when his legs had gone!!

Not sure I can agree with that statement :coffee:

My mate bumped into him last night in tenerife. Said first and foremost he's a really nice fella and that he's gutted to be leaving. He's been a good player for us, time to move on though. Good luck to him in the future.

We're all entitled to our opinions mate. In my opinion he is one of the most technically gifted players I have seen. That doesn't mean the most just one of the most and I would still stand by that.

He read the game really well, was balanced with two good feet and would take the ball in tight situations that others would shy away from.

I was at a sportsman's dinner this year and ended up speaking to the main speaker later on, who asked me who I thought our most under rated and possibly best player had been over the last ten years. As you could guess I named Leon, he then went onto to eulogise about his ability and how the professionals can see the talent etc.

As I said it's about opinions mate. Ours obviously differ!

He was a player. For sure.

But in 40 years I'm certain we have had better players. Look back to the Kendall era. Peter Reid was better.

I agree at his peak Osman could play on the deck. But physically he did lack a lot. Which he had to make up with guts.

Agreed on Reidy mate, he was part of the best midfield I have watched. My point was technical and I also pointed out originally that Ossie did lack in size. Glad we agree that he could play though mate ;).

Pretty sure they knew they were getting released when the Club hadn't opened dialogue over a new contract.

Am not sure your 100% correct about knowing they were too be released. I tend to think that someone would have been talking about when the manager comes in he will make a descion etc . Almost leaving them dangling.
Clubs often treat players that are coming toward the end of their contracts despicably. Mangers, directors will all promise players that they will do this or see what they can do knowing that in all likelihood they player will be on his way . It's part of the reason players have little or no loyalty.

I could never understand the abuse he got on here.... surely anyone who understands football can see what a fantastic player he was in his prime, .... two excellent feet, rarely lost the ball, excellent snappy passing and dribbling in tight situations , and scored some brilliant goals in very important games.... the header against city at goodison, when he got mangled by kompany straight after will always be my favourite..... plus seemed a genuine guy, who really cared about the club...... disgrace he didn't get a proper send off

Don't know how true this article is

Said at the time why did howard only get the goodbye treatment at the last home game

i'm presuming howard got one because he was definitely going. These two have probably been told, we'll wait and see if you're in the new managers plans. But then, if gibson has signed a new contract that goes completely against that theory, unless his was triggered by game time ... something he surly hasn't achieved?

They'll both get a goodbye treatment, i'm almost certain, i'd think Kenwright wouldn't let that slide.

Sounds to me their agents not keeping them in the loop
Clubs talk directly with agents and not with players, so laughable how they are shocked
