IIRC this lad last year sat himself out of the England U23 set up because he preferred to focus on club career.

If he does play on Saturday that should be it for Russia.

It'll be a big call for Southgate. The lad has already taken the piss once before with the national set up. If he chooses him again after crying off then that should be that.

How many times did Gerrard and the like do that though? Not once did the FA ever press for their players to miss a league match after missing an international game.

A player like Gomez though has no hand to play. It's not as though he's proven himself as a crucial player for either club or country. He's expendable.

All this ^ is with the view that he actually will play for Liverpool on Saturday. Maybe he wont, but if he does that should surely mean his WC journey ends...it defo would if he played for West Brom or some other club of that status.

Looked a bad ankle sprain he got on Friday tbf, one of those that's bad enough to not put weight on but not serious enough for a stretcher job

It looked like his ankle got rolled over. I've seen other players get treatment and get on with it. He was then deemed fit enough by England doctors to be included in the squad for Italy, but he pulled out.

As said, if he isn't involved on Saturday for Liverpool then there's no case to answer. But if he does, then he surely cant be seen as reliable for a World Cup?
