Lionel Messi - the ultimate 'flat track bully'?

Our 'Carra' isn't wrong either, there's no way the World cup is the highest level, it's like a poor man's version of the Champions League.

Yeah that Messi is badly gash.

This thread makes me sad.

Hes an outstanding player, playing in a team with a clueless manager, everytime he gets the ball hes got 5 players around him.

Write him off if you want, he will still school the world next season.

He'll terrorize Osasuna and Malaga.

If he's not the best player in the World. I wanna know who is....

I think he could have been better perhaps yes, but he was by far better than many of the other so called world class players at this World Cup.....

I think there's delusion going on here: take a look at that game today again. It's bogus to implant the seed of belief that Messi had to go deep all the time to get into the game. He didn't have to do that. He was fed the ball in and around the box on many occasions - he was shut down. That's all there is to it. I dont think the movement ahead of him is any better at Barca than with his national team, so sometimes you just have to say a class was reached, in terms of the opposition faced, that he couldn't handle. One thing that was underlined was the ball in this WC: usually Messi can be relied on to pepper the goal with deadly accuracy. That's a major part of his game that takes the eye at club level when he cant find his way through a solid defence. He was robbed of that in this WC and so the focus was more on his ability to pull the strings (or rather inability).

Sorry, but I think Messi had a chastening experience. It'll be interesting to see what the Argentine inquest concludes re his efforts.
WOW!
Sorry, but it's just ridiculous - there's no width with current Argentina team, as both full backs are very conserwative. And on the other side - Dani Alves is one of the best full backs around to make a "false runs", runs into space, or runs behind a defense. This one thing made a huge difference.
Messi had a two players ahead of him, who were positioned quite centrally - Tevez and Higuain, it was very stupid.
Argentina was playing a system which has no chance to work on this level - Diamond with wide players. These days Diamond is popular, but usually it's a version, when midfielders are narrow, and fullbacks and strikers provide a width. Maradona did it totally differently - it was Di Maria and Maxi who were asked to do it, leaving Messi and Mascherano in centre.
Messi had to drop deeper and deeper, and he find himself aften in positions Xavi or Iniesta are when playing for Barca - just because Maradona didn't think using additional central player, who can pass (like Veron or Pastore) would be a good idea.
Damm, I could write much, much more about that...

Of course ultimately he was a disappointment, but he was put in quite frankly impossible situation.
And one more thing - look what Maradona did at WC in 1982, that's a proper comparison of Argentina team and Messi's age. Maybe he will disappoint in future competitions too, but Maradona was also heavily criticized after World Cup in Spain. 4 years later, the same people were calling him "The best ever"

Will Klose be the Worlds best ever striker if he scores 2 more goals is it? Bearing in mind he's scored 3 club level goals this season. ...

As an explanation as to why Messi was misfiring, that's a nonsense mate. Tevez and Higuain were not shackled to the centre of the park as you insist, they were pulling wide. Going back on myself a bit, it might not have been quite up their with E'to and Henry from a couple of seasons back, but these are top quality forwards he had in front of him today. You just have to, inevitably, come to the conclusion that (contra the nonsensical line being peddled by some here) the World Cup is a tough nut to crack. It's the mental weight as much as the inability to assert your game. Messi simply didn't have the shoulders broad enough for the job. Simple as that. Or maybe it was his 'virus'?
