Hi all.
Son eager to remain North West, ideally Liverpool to attend university.

Studying Law.

Anyone got any experience or knowledge on any of the universities within Liverpool.

Any comments on accommodation, crime etc.

All help or tips greatly appreciated.

Liverpool or Manchester universities if he is academically inclined. Both great cities for student life.

Law is a vocational subject though, like hair-dressing, so the ex-polys might be fine if he's more concerned with just training to qualify.

LJMU isn’t quite in the same league as Liverpool Uni, but it’s excellent for many subjects, especially construction related courses, as I did. Nursing seems a good option, too.

First place I lived in as a student was Europa Court (2009) just off Erskine Street. Decent building but very poor management.

Second place was Atlantic Point right opposite the main Byrom Street LJMU building. Was absolutely fine and well managed. Very secure facility.

For my final year I shared a house in Wavertree just off Picton Road. It was a bit too out the way for me, but no issues. It was a bit too far from the main parts of Smithdown Road where all the main student activity was at the time.

I was in Liverpool yesterday for a meeting and I’m always amazed at how much has been built since I left in 2014. It’s just exploded. The choice of accommodation is amazing. The London Road area was grim when I was there, but it looks alright now and it’s a bit of a hotspot for students. Also the Hope Street area is a great spot. It has a great feel to it and it’s quite diverse.

Lancaster isn't very far and it's an amazing uni if you can get in.
My ex went there and for me it’s a proper university in the way that the Liverpool unis aren’t. Absolutely everything is on campus and it’s basically a student village. Really good quality homes as well. Amazing facility.

My ex did medicine there so it’s clearly a very good uni.

My lad went to John Moores to do his degree, subsequently did a Masters there as well! He worked hard but enjoyed the Uni and the social life around town!
Ten years after starting at JM he’s still living and working in Liverpool - after having to move away from Liverpool when I was 16 I’m quite jealous!

Yeh it's not quite got the same vibe as an inner-city uni, more styled like the yanks do college, but it's one of the best in the country for sure.

Depends.

University league tables are often heavily slanted towards research, so the post 92 institutions don't fare as well. There's a trend in University marketing to bang on about 'research informed teaching' which is fine, but also means the institution can be more focused on research (research intensive and / or russell group) than teaching. Post 92s can and do quite often offer the better teaching experience. They're particularly good at onboarding and supporting folk from nontraditional backgrounds. I think they research intensives often fall over on this.

I've taught and researched in both research intensives and post 92s. My advice, check them out and go where you think suits you best.
