the books are so much better. not least because the films cut so much of them out like very important characters like tom bombadil. you needed characters like him in to provide the gray between the white of gandalf and the black of sauron. he could have taken the ring and had those two for breakfast if he wanted. problem was in the books he wasn't bothered who won the war.

also the visuals were peter jackson's new zealand idea of how middle earth looked. not mine and no doubt not tolkien's.

thirdly.... how can any movie be considered the best with a line.... toss me.... coming from a dwarf. in jokes all the way there and nothing i want to do with~!

I was glad they cut out Tom Bombadil. Those chapters are always a chore. He was such a daft character. Alluded that he was actually God, yet he's prepared to just let everyone die while he shags his blonde wife. Singing his gay little songs.

lol, thanks for that neonaonea... and i'm happy you liked the end result of the movie.

thing is that fans of the book actually wanted to see the book translated on film and all we got was peter jacksons version of what he thought were the good bits in the book.

i guess he did not like tom bombadil either.

but i'd rather watch a movie of the books rather than someone reading them and discarding important plot delevopments...

it should have read 'based on the book' by tolkien at the end... swiftly followed by 'endorsed by the new zealand tourist board'.

I think they did a smashing job of transferring it to the screen. When you think about it, every movie is like 3 hours long, and they had at least 45 minutes of extras for each movie that they put in to the bonus DVD. With the size of the books there was just no way they could include everything.

But to think that because they left certain things out showed any lack of respect for the source material is wrong in my opinion, from the DVD extras such as the making of: series, they really really really really love the books. I'm sure they would've kept Bombadil in, time permitting. but when you think about it, it really doesn't add too much to the overall plot. It's a bit of filler, really.

Would have been funny if they had copied everything from the books into the film though. Imagine the Council of Elrond? xD
