Because he's been replaced by Digne, who is playing very well.

I don't think we can start with the radical statements like 'Digne is far better than Baines was', or in fact say that he's yet even close (for us).

He's played five games for Everton, and looks an absolute steal and I'm chuffed we've got him.

But people seem to be quick to forget how good Baines was at his peak.

Yeh I get that but all that really matters is the present which is: Digne is good, Baines isn’t. Not sure why people are comparing the now to 5-6 years ago.

For me when Leighton was in his prime he was right there with Marcelo, Evra and Cole with maybe Felipe Luis and possibly Alaba and Alba right at the end in the discussion. Granted it was a weak era at the position because right now Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Shaw and Digne all look class and that's just the Premier League. But still Leighton was as close to the peak of the game as we've had in a long time for a few years.

What

baines was never world class, he was to weak defensively to be a world class left back

what he was absolutely superb going forward and a decent defender
I think maybe if he'd played for one of the top clubs whilst at his peak, a team where he wasn't expected to defend as much as he was with us then he may have been recognised as one of the best.

Regardless of what Dave will say on the subject, only Ray Wilson was in the same league as Baines in terms of left backs we've ever had.

Between about 2009 and 2013, Baines was one of the top left backs in the world. I'm not suggesting he was THE best, but I'd have had him in the top 5 in that position over that period.

If you're having Marcelo as "world class", then he would fit the same description

well one has played for THE biggest club in the world constantly at a high level for about 10 years, winning trophy year after year including the 3 biggest club football trophies for the last 3 years in a row

1 had a good partnership with pienaar and won nothing

they are the same though...

Baines biggest weakness was his ambition & loyalty. I have no doubt the Bayern & United rumours were true. Just look at he chances he created, no one gets close to him esp in 2012. He could had played for any of the top teams in the world.

I love baines as much as the next guy, and going forward he was definitely one of the best in the world at the time, but defensively he was no where near the coles, evras etc

Madly mate, i was just reading defensively and he was actually better defensively than Evra ( was a article on when he nearly joined united)
