Contracts mate. Not saying he would be happy to go back, but if they have any kind of paperwork saying it’s legally binding, off he goes. Was just asking because Barca never seem to sell anyone without it.

Well not necessarily. Anyone can have a buyback clause in the contract that the club can't refuse but the player can absolutely refuse if they want to.

I can't see a guaranteed starter going back to a club just to be used as a squad player or just a means to make profit. That works for Digne as well as Mina when he gets fit. Geri left us basically knowing that he had no future at Barca (But also none with us) that's probably why he left. Much easier to move to a club and get good wages as a Barcelona reject rather than an Everton one.

Yeah Alba only really came onto the scene as world class at Euro 2012, then he went to Barca and went up a few levels. I’d argue Cole was past it in 2012 too.
For me when Leighton was in his prime he was right there with Marcelo, Evra and Cole with maybe Felipe Luis and possibly Alaba and Alba right at the end in the discussion. Granted it was a weak era at the position because right now Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Shaw and Digne all look class and that's just the Premier League. But still Leighton was as close to the peak of the game as we've had in a long time for a few years.

Not the case here as Digne has no buyback clause and what you describe is only a recent phenomena with this current board - buybacks is more a RM thing. Buybacks in contracts for Barcelona players usually involve those who aren't getting enough minutes (including youth players) at Barca and are shipped out to play & potentially earn a place back in the squad. It's a modern way of farming out development.

But, Valverde wants another experienced LB to rotate with Alba and is not interested in playing the young Miranda

Baines is a legend and a fantastic backup. Digne is now the better LB by more than a little, but i dont think thats bashing Baines. He’s an older player now, and luckily we got a fantastic replacement before he went down hill, which would dirty our memory of him. Id love it if he stayed for another season as a backup, and stay with the club in a non-player job after that. He’s the perfect example of great player for us, could have left for bigger teams when in his prime, but stayed loyal through thich and thin.
One of my absolute favorite players, but shouldnt start if Digne is available.
You do realise you have just woken the anti christ with that post

marcelo, alba, lahm, cole

Marcelo wasn't better in that period, no chance.

Alba probably at the same level, but playing in a much better side.

Lahm wasn't a left-back, he was a right-back who then moved central when Pep came in.

Cole - maybe in the early part of that but by 2012/13 he wasn't close to Baines.

Why are we talking about Baines so much? He’s crap

Because he's been replaced by Digne, who is playing very well.

I don't think we can start with the radical statements like 'Digne is far better than Baines was', or in fact say that he's yet even close (for us).

He's played five games for Everton, and looks an absolute steal and I'm chuffed we've got him.

But people seem to be quick to forget how good Baines was at his peak.
