Prime example of what happens in a squad with zero competition
This, this and this all day, no competition, how do you go that extra yard in training when you know you are starting no matter what, even if it's subconscious as I don't believe Digne is a slacker.

I actually don't think he was *that* bad yesterday.

He's been asked to be more defensive this season and I've just checked and all of those metrics are up. Now, I don't think that means he's playing well, but he's been asked to be a defensive player and that's probably the weakest side of his game. He made seven tackles yesterday, which is very unusual. Most players might have 3-4 a game on the high end. Seven is mad.

At the same time, it's taking away from what he's good at which is going forward. Yesterday he did get forward, he created three chances. But as he was going forward, we had massive gaps down that side and Benitez just didn't change it, didn't think it would be sensible to change the shape.

He's just been asked to defend more, and he's not a good defender.

He's a good attacking full-back, but is being asked to attack less.

That's on the manager.

Digne making mistakes in games is obviously on him, but the manager is the one who sets the system and isn't making changes to issues that have been there all season.

He’s been garbage in every department including attacking for ages.

Since coming back from that injury last year he hasn't been great but the numbers don't back it up mate, he still created our most chances in the second half of last season. That isn't just measured by how many crosses he lumped into the box.

I agree that he's way down on the form he showed before that, way down, but those issues have been compounded by the manager now playing him defensively. So he's basically being asked to do more of what he is not great at and less of what he is good at.

Now, every full-back should be able to defend, obviously, but there has to be a balance.

You rarely see a defender having to make seven tackles in one game. That's a really, really high number, yets that what Digne made yesterday. Because the system doesn't work.

Struggled yesterday - partly down to being booked, which really annoyed me as Allan should have been the one to stop Sarr, but he let him glide past him (which he does all too often) and Digne had to take a yellow.

And we wonder why we never achieve anything when our defenders are not actually good at defending.

Throw in Michael Keane - good passer of the ball but a complete coward who gets bullied way too easily.
