Lukaku's career is a parable. He backed his ambition ruthlessly, has made a fantastic amount of money, but is simply not loved by any fan base in the league where he has spent the bulk of his career or truly associated with any specific club. In truth, his ambition exceeded his talent - and certainly clouded his judgment to the extent that he has made one bad career move after another in the last five years.
I think he's the best Everton striker since Graeme Sharp. But his move to United was a failure. His move to Inter - while successful - was actually an admission that he was not a world-class striker. It's 25 years since a move to Inter was an upwardly mobile one, 2010 CL triumph notwithstanding. The return to Chelsea was nothing more than neediness to somehow prove Mourinho was wrong about him. He hasn't.
Lukaku was an excellent forward, but he was always tier two in the cold light of day. He is not a player who affects Champions League finals.
