Very good interview from what I can piece together he is very driven and has a huge desire to succeed he wants to be the Belgium number 1 I can easy see him banging in 20+ goals

Unless we get taken over by a rich guy we have no chance of keeping him.

“When you do well for a team such as Everton then it becomes easier to go into a top team and establish yourself. Look at the number of players from here who have gone to a big club. It’s impressive. Jack Rodwell, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney. Hopefully for me it will be the same.”

We are a stepping stone for him and for any prospects. This is what worries me about Barkley, we just ain't big enough to fend off 'the big clubs' so its a viscious circle which will keep us as an 'also ran' team.

Do you realise that if he scores 20+ goals this season, we get contributions from our midfield re our goal tally, and defend like we have done of late, come the end of the season we will be challenging for the title, nevermind the Top 4...I know there are lots of IF's in that statement, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility...

Just remember, all of the BIG teams he speaks about, also have lots of IF's if they want to win the Title; IF Van Persie stays fit the whole season and IF Rooney is not sold...if Man City can gel and become more consistent; IF Tottenhams Sixty Two central midfielders stay happy all season as they rotate in and out of the squad, IF Coutinho [yes, they are top 4 contenders] can stay fit; IF Mourinho can get the strikers that he has to score away from home...+ injuries to key players, teams falling flat at critical junctures in the season...

It's all about IF'a and BUT's people...we have the best balanced squad we have had, probably in the last five seasons, we can make the make the Top Four...it's not a pipedream...

Is it?

I'd agree that if everything clicks with the new signings and Lakaku bags in 15-20 goals, we will be right up in the mix of that top 4. We have a potentially very good first 11 and good squad options.

Barry, Barkley and Lakaku could be key this season along with other players we'v come to expect alot from over the yrs Jags, Baines, Pienaar, Mirallas....

Just imagine, minimal injuries and players in good form......

he could be the final piece of the jigsaw lids b) #kopitebahaviour ha!

Nah, its seriously optimistic and you can see why so many of our fans want him to stay before hes even kicked a ball for us. Its give us all a massive boost because we seen what he can do for WBA and its exciting to see what he can do for us.

Just been chatting to Greg O'keefe on twitter after an embarrassing spelling mistake on his article...asked if there was any chance he might think about staying. He said theres a small posibility but his main objective right now is to be Chelseas number 1.

Just hope his bags a trick at anfield and has an Alan Ball moment on the half way line

Its not a pipedream though no. Its an achievable target. I think we can stay out of the press and under the radar for most of the season also which will help.

The players have never really responded well to pressure before. How many times when we got an easy fixture and could have gone X amount of points clear have we fluffed it and started beleiving our own press?

We would be best keeping of the back pages and going quielty about our business.

I built on that in my second season and then I had an opportunity to come to Everton but when Chelsea came in I had to go there.

“I was so close to coming a week or two before I joined Chelsea. They had been monitoring me for a long time too.

“But after my year at West Brom I knew that if Everton came in for me I would go there. It is a club which is always in the top six. It’s the type of club I need to be at. Now it’s up to us to do well as a team. I’m confident in the players here.”

Lukaku admits that one of his aims is to prove Jose Mourinho wrong for letting him spend another season away from Stamford Bridge, and his ultimate goal is to return to West London.

But in the meantime he wants to make a sizeable impact at Everton – including getting his hands on a trophy.

They are big words from a big man, and the forward intends not to waste a second of his time on Merseyside.

“I would never put Chelsea totally out of my mind because I’m still contracted there and my main ambition is to play there,” he says. “We will see at the end of the season what will happen.

“But why shouldn’t we succeed this season here? We have a big squad. I have spoken to some of the players and they said they have never known the squad as big as it is now. We have a lot of quality too and to see them play is very impressive. I expect good things from this year.

“We have a blend of experience and good younger players like me, Ross and Stonesy so the players are there.

“I sense this is a big club. You can see from the stadium, the training ground and things like that. I had already heard good things about it so I was eager to come.”

His first year at Chelsea saw Lukaku go from being the best young striker in his country to just one of several major talents at Stamford Bridge.

But he relished the chance to learn from top performers like Didier Drogba and Nicola Anelka, and wants to carry on learning during his time at Goodison.

“I am looking for consistency. I want to be at the top at a young age and stay there. Expectations are a good thing,” he says.

“I will keep things simple. My life outside of football is very simple.

“Both Didier and Nicolas showed me the mentality of never giving up, never stopping.

“They both had a great work ethic. Nicolas was one of the best professionals I’ve ever seen. He was 31 when I was playing with him but he was fitter than guys my age. That means a lot.

“Didier was still doing runs around the pitch to get himself fit at the end of the first season and the form he had at the end of my first year wasn’t a coincidence it was because he worked hard.

“If I do my best and work hard in training the goals will come.”

Both Kevin Mirallas and Marouane Fellaini tried to talk him into moving to Everton while away together on international duty, but it was ultimately the lure of working under Roberto Martinez that did the trick.

“I got the call saying I could leave and then a few minutes later Kevin Mirallas knocked on my door and I said, ‘Sit down and we can talk’,” he says.

“We talked for two and three hours and he explained to me about Liverpool and told me about his first year here.

“He told me about the derby, the people and the club and it all sounded very positive.

“Then when he left I got a call from Mr Martinez and we spoke for half an hour and he was very convincing.

“I came here because it is a team that can dominate games and Roberto Martinez as a coach likes possession of the ball and he’s a manager who can really help me at this stage of the career to be a striker with good movement. I think he’ll help make me more clever on the pitch too.

“Sometimes I’m maybe too enthusiastic on the pitch and have lost easy balls in the past but at a team like Everton where there is a lot of possession of the ball I can improve.”

Ask him if he has set a goal target for himself and his eyes glow. Remind Lukaku that it is rare for an Everton target man to notch 20 league goals and they glow brighter.

But for now at least, the predator is keeping his aims up his sleeve.

“And although he is determined to be the best, he won’t compare himself to his current top flight peers.

“I’ve learned never to focus on other strikers in the league but only on myself,” he says. “I look for that opportunity all the time and keep it simple. I don’t worry about how many others score at other clubs.

“When I’m on the pitch I want to score as much as possible – every single game.”

So we went for him before Chelsea FFS moyes

All the talk in the press this season, if he does well, will be about "Chelsea's striker, on loan at Everton".

I'll prefer it that way tbh. I wouldn't want to get my hopes up only for him to go back to Chelsea for nothing.

Totally this.
On a lot of occassions last season during that string of draws we had, we went into matches knowing that a win would put us right into the mixer of the top 4, but the occassion was to much and we would produce absolutely dire performances.

It stems from a small-team mentality, being afraid to go out and push on, and was typical of Moyes' safety-first approach.
