I'd actually try Baines left mid rather than defensive mid. Our wingers are pretty rubbish but if you had Baines one side Lennon or Mirallas the other it would be balanced with both flanks locked down defensively (more so Lennon than Mirallas!). Baines has lost a bit of pace and his set pieces have gone but he's still an assist machine. He practically abandons his defensive duties most games anyway so why not stick Garbutt/Oviedo behind him and just let him get on with it?

Because they're trying to find a way for Garbutt to actually play. He won't stay if he's not gonna play. It's not outlandish really. Are we better with Garbutt LB and Baines LM or Baines LB and someone like McGeady or Naismith LM? I'm actually not so sure. Baines' best position is obviously LB, but it could makes sense to try and accommodate both of them. Not saying we should do it, but it's worth a discussion at least.

Baines's free kicks and corners have deteriorated badly and for various reasons he's not neen getting forward as much as some previous seasons but he's still been amazingly effective for a full back.

Fair enough, I can't deny the stats. I think his free kicks and corners are the reason for me thinking lowly of him this season, just so used to seeing them be perfect week in week out.
 
Every other source, bar this 1, says Baines is on 8, weird.
