I very much wanted Garbutt to play against West Ham despite not having Barry and a fit Mirallas/Pienaar to protect him but I wouldn't against Wolfsburg with the same conditions.

They are too good, that 4-1 scoreline was very flattering to us and they have just come off a 10 game unbeaten streak with 9 of those wins. Unlike West ham they don't have any injuries to their first team I'm aware of and we are away from home so it is a lot harder to predict how a young player will handle it. I also rate this game as more important than the west Ham game - we had plenty of time to recover any lost points in the league over the course of the season, if we get beaten heavily in Germany it puts a lot of pressure on our last game against Krasnodar as there is a significant advantage to finishing first in the group.

....he's a left back playing IN position. I understand it might stress him out a bit however how on earth is playing a left back as a left back less desirable than playing a hugely limited right back as a left back?

It might not stress him out, I've been very impressed with Luke virtually every time I've seen him. But I'd put his strengths as being an attacking fullback who overlaps well with his winger plus an excellent set piece delivery - I don't think he is as solid yet on withstanding lots of pressure from attackers.

In this game I expect us to be very much on the defensive both because of the quality of the opposition and the fact we are away from home and whatever you think of Hibbert in terms of going forwards he is very reliable defensively. Whoever plays left back is unlikely to have much protection from midfield or winger because of our injury situation. Personally I'd set us to counterattack at pace with Barkley/Lukaku central with whoever is fit from Mirallas/McGeady/Atsu on the wings but keep our fullbacks less attacking than usual which would suit Hibbert over Garbutt. We only really need a point in this game.

One of the very few criticisms I have of Roberto is that his fine words are occasionally not backed up by actions. I think that's the case when it comes to developing the younger players.

Unless he's considering Oviedo as a Pienaar replacement, we can't afford to have three left backs sucking up wages. If Garbutt is good, then he's the obvious replacement for LB given the years he has on Bryan. He won't truly know if Garbutt is any good unless he plays him. And it is very unlikely that there is any game coming up where the entire fan base feels comfortable about blooding him. It's a leap in the dark but one which needs to be taken.

If it is going to be a hard game away tomorrow is there not a case to have this lad playing on the left hand side of midfield ahead of hibbert at left back?

What's wrong with having 3 LB's?

The recent case with Baines and Oviedo has shown that it's reasonable to have a third one. Martinez just hasn't played him, for whatever reason he's chosen

That doesn't mean the idea of having a third LB doesn't have any worth though

Think it's more that no good LB is going to be happy being a 3rd LB.

It's fine to have a promising youth LB, but I don't think we can keep 3 good to great players all happy with their gametime...and we don't have the cash to cover wages that would make them overlook that.

Oviedo as a direct replacement for Pienaar isn't such a bad idea... except that we have Mirallas to play wide up front either left of right and is far more likely to play than Bryan. Something of a wealth of players on the left flank that we haven't enjoyed for a long time. And with Seamus and McGeady ready to bomb on down the right with Samuel Eto'o also able to work his magic on the right flank, we should be able to mix 'n match quite effectively when all are fully fit... With Rom, Nais and even Kone through the middle.

Well it either puts pressure on us, or Lille draw and we're through even if we get beat 10 - 0

Yes a draw in the other game would be excellent for us in terms of qualifying. But don't think we should rely on that happening nor try for anything less than winning the group given that doing so will likely mean we have an easier match next round.
Oh yeah of course, i personally think Bobby will go out there playing for a draw though, just like in Lille, we could've had them! Tomorrow will be incredibly tough and a draw would be perfect, just fingers crossed the other game is a draw too!

If we were to lose, then losing by up to a 2 goal margin would still leave us ahead of Wolfsburg if the group was to finish with the pair of us both on 11 points (i.e they draw in Lille, we beat Krasnodar).

......I'm not sure anybody on here truly knows the situation regarding Garbutt. Saying that, it's difficult to imagine the club allowing his contract to run down which suggests he's not prepared to sign another. Some will say if that's the case then transfer him in January but he only moves if he agrees and he might have a lucrative Bosman lined up.

All conjecture, of course, but might be the reason RM played Hibbert at the weekend. Just a thought.
