He's going to be tough to sign with Baines ahead of him because there are plenty of sides who can use him.

What about playing him on the left wing at the moment? He's better than anything we've got out there at the moment, gives him some game time (like coleman on the right) and can take the pressure off him from a defensive point of view.

I dunno mate...Baines is still ace, Garbutt looks like a ready made replacement. Oviedo there too...Barry in a pinch. I can't believe I'm thinking this, but perhaps it's time to sell Leighton Baines.

I hate that I just typed that.

There is nothing I've seen from Baines that suggests that he hasn't got a good 3 years left. He's in tremendous shape and plays every minute of every match and does the little things like never missing a penalty. Baines wouldn't agree to move to a club that isn't a step up for him and I don't see any of the big 4 spenders (well Arsenal maybe) shelling out 8-12M for him.

Signing Mirallas is priority #1 IMO. We should easily have the money to match or exceed any other offers to sign Garbutt too. The problem is going to be convincing him that being 2nd string at a club in which he didn't grow up in is the best move for his career.

Yeah man...I hear you, and I'm probably getting a little too worked up about one game...but he looks like Baines Mark II...and we've got cover.

But you're right, we'd likely not get the kind of money we'd want. Garbutt looks like the real deal though...sure hope he signs.

The club just has to do a good sell job and make it know that his time will come. I'm sure Oviedo had regrets signing for us and thinking he'd never get a match. Maybe Baines thought this way too once.

Given Garbutt's relative experience compared to some of his fellow youngsters – although, at 21, he's an old man in comparison to Ledson, Dowell and friends – it should come as no surprise the left back was the most assured member of the starting 11. He has been capped by England Under-21s eight times – three more than appearances for Everton. It has been a curious career so far.

But Thursday was the night he marked down just what he's capable of. Driving runs, a magnificent set-piece delivery and a brilliant left foot. Sound familiar? He made 14 crosses – the rest of the team made seven combined – and was a clear outlet. His four key passes also matched the output of his team-mates.

Food for thought for Roberto – and the comfort in knowing any misfortune to Baines wouldn't necessarily spell doom and gloom.
