I was impressed by Garbutt last night, and I would go out on limb and say after having seen him play on couple of outings that he has the mentality and the belief and thoughts that he belongs with the first team. Yes, he'll make a mistake or two on the way, but compare that to Coleman in the past and his ability to make a daft tackle in the box, and Stones' ability to get caught out under the ball. What I'm saying is they soon learn what they can and cant do and when to do it and minimise these mistakes. Martinez should be looking to give him some match time.

Perhaps not a popular thought this, but here goes.

Garbutt's contract ends at the end of the year (as far as I'm aware). From what we've seen of him, we'd be absolutely mental to let him leave on a free. The lad has got it, its as simple as that. He's 21. Baines is 30. His delivery in the few games I've seen him play has been astounding, head and shoulders above what Baines has been delivering recently. We need this kid in our squad, and if I was him, e.g. looking more than likely to play second fiddle to Baines and maybe even Oviedo for the next 3 years at least, I'd be looking at offers elsewhere.

I'd slot him into the team. Not arsed if he makes mistakes, Coleman made plenty and look at him now. Stones has made a fair few and looks every inch a world beater. Throw Garbutt into the first team. I love Baines but if you think about the next 10 years, Luke could be part of one seriously superb defence.

I'd actually start playing Baines alongside McCarthy at centre mid. We'll never know until we try, and I think we might actually see the odd through ball/long range wondergoal if he started playing there. I reckon Leighton has it in his locker.

We've seen more than enough square pegging Naismith right mid, Barkley left mid etc from Roberto to suggest he wont be afraid to try it, but I genuinely think it's worth trying, and reckon Baines could easily pull off the centre mid job.

Everton FC confident Luke Garbutt will sign new summer deal

Exclusive: England U-21 international Luke Garbutt out of contract in July but Roberto Martinez ready to offer him long contract at Everton

Everton FC are confident they can tie down highly-rated defender Luke Garbutt to a new deal in the summer.

The England U-21 international’s current contract expires in July, and after a string of impressive performances for the first team he has no shortage of admirers away from Goodison.

However, Roberto Martinez is not panicking at the prospect of the 21-year-old being out of contract in the summer, with players under the age of 24 unable to leave on a free transfer if they are offered fresh terms by their club.

And Martinez does not envisage that scenario being an issue anyway, as the ECHO understands that the Catalan has every intention of keeping the left-back at the club.

Garbutt shone in the Europa League dead rubber tie against Krasnodar on Thursday, and there is a belief at Goodison that he can push Leighton Baines for his place in the coming seasons.

The Blues are also content that Garbutt is settled on Merseyside and wants to remain playing for a manager who has already deployed him three times this season.

Brilliant news if true.

Good news, this excerpt from his interview in last nights match programme is quite reasuring as well.

"It's been a long, tough road for me but I think it's made me a better player over the course of time. I feel as though I am in a good place now and I just want to build myself a good career at Everton because I want to stay here for the long-term."

"I think now and over the last five years, I really have learnt to love the club"

Wonderful

This is a problem, tbh.

He's absolutely superb. But so is Oviedo. And Baines is the best in the world.

Why wasn't he born right footed :(

I don't think he is quite ready to replace Baines this season. He hasn't developed the defensive awareness to be relied upon in the PL. I would however be more than happy to put him in in the LW slot, switch Mirallas over to RW and start playing with some genuine width. We did that with Coleman when he came into the team and Garbutt is much more technically able to play that role.
He reassured me a lot in this regard vs Wolfburg. Perisic is an excellent winger and he targeted Luke who only had a makeshift midfield and Mirallas as protection. He coped so well that Perisic was shifted onto the other wing and they tried Kevin De Bruyne, another good player, against him with no more joy.

Would prefer we keep playing him as LB, learning correct positioning is very important for young players and very hard to do if you keep on being switched all over the pitch. Since Oviedo is already a full international who has experience playing in midfield if we have to move one of our left backs think he is the better choice.
