Just a little thought about Garbutt and his future with us.
I see him very much in abit of a Ryan Bertrand syndrome, promising young English left back in a specialist position (not like say browning or Stones who can play rb,cb) stuck behind Englands number one left back and one of the best left backs the club has ever had! Baines still has 4/5 years left in him.
So what does Garbutt do? Sit around getting a game here or a game there (which isn't gaurentee'd with Oviedo around), does he go out on loan season after season and before he knows it he is 26 and not really played for a settled team (although it seems Bertrand has found a good fit in Southampton, but id say he has wasted 3/4 years of bouncing around loan clubs)
What do you guys think?

If I could, I'd be shipping him to Villa/Burnley/Hull or - top championship club on loan, he's got huge potential, but if he's sat fiddling his thumbs in the ressies, how does he improve?

.....I've said before that I'm very surprised a Premier Manager hasn't already taken a punt on him. Not sure where he is from a contract perspective but wonder if he might run his down and make a few bob for himself via a Bosman. Hope we have him signed up, can't have too many good players but you have to think he will want to move on.

Is this not what being a successful club is all about. Younger players have to be very good to take the place of the older established one's. With Baines in the team Garbutt has to get to that level to take his place. I'd be happy with a first team all of Baines' ability with players of Garbutt's potential trying to oust them. Surely the craft of a good manager is to keep the younger players interested and vying to replace the top quality ones. If Garbutt, or any of the others, can't do that then maybe they aren't good enough. Having said that I do think he is good enough.

I really hope Baines makes a Lahm move into the central midfield and so Garbutt and Oviedo will have our left back position between them.

You want our best left back moved to a position he's never played before so we can accommodate another left back? K then.
No, I want to move our best player into a position, where he could play the best football of his career. Lahm plays as well, and they are quite similar world class players.
