Really poor team this. If you want to play on the counter against City then you need energy and pace. So from the woeful team the other night he's kept 33 year old Barry (3rd game in a week) 37 year old Distin (4th game in a week and a half) and Howard (who just needed dropping). He's then brought in Hibbert and Etoo, two players with neither pace nor energy. Now I'm sure Hibbert will do a good job but I don't understand what Etoo is going to do unless its to nick a goal. Naismith and McCarthy would have been perfect for this game but in their absence I don't see why Browning, McGeady or even Pienaar aren't getting a run out. We will get ran though in midfield. Just thank god Silva isn't playing and hope Aguero has the wrong boots on.

Who would you bring in for Distin and Barry

Indeed. Strangely though, surely it means he's planning on a direct counter attacking game long to Lukaku & Eto'o. Which is strange for obvious Martinez-related reasons.
It'd never have happened last season. We'd have gone toe to toe.

Pragmatic or ditching principles?

That looks way too much like we're hunkering down for the draw to me. Fair enough if we get it, but not the way you want to see an Everton manager to set up ideally.

Also, Martinez knows things aren't going well so he's trying something a bit different. Cool your jets.
Exactly. We've all been worried (or for some complaining) about lacklustre performances as of late. No Plan A.... We've been worked out.... etc.

Now he's tried something different in an attempt to get a result, everyone is quick to jump on the negative bandwagon.

Maybe that's what happens when you're in a rut: criticised for not being adaptive with players and formation; criticised for being pragmatic.

Really, we should judge after the game if he's got it right or wrong.

Mirallas, lukaku, Baines and Coleman fit that perfectly. Barry, Distin and Howard aren't going to be responsible for using their pace to get up the pitch quickly are they?

I hope someone applies the Vaseline pre game to Barry and Distin's arses coz they are going to get a fooking off of Toure and Aguero, no doubt about it,
