So then. Good fortune? A brilliant backs to the wall 90 minutes and even maybe a Lukaku winner or a Barks 35 yarder smacked off the bar. Who knows?

Then there's the usual. Totally hammered 3 or 4-0 or 1. Perhaps if that happens we can hold out hands up and accept the better side wins.

Then there's the Everton Way - the slow, sadistic, hurtful, luckless (in a Collina/Thomas/Clatt etc) way - where we hold our own (0-0 or 1-1) for 87 minutes before a horrible deflection off some poor unfortunate MoM Evertonian cruelly beats Tim Howard and we succumb in extra time to another and perhaps - in Villarreal style a late killer as we chase a winning away goal.

Which is it to be? History or Pain?

Is the match being televised anywhere in Brighton tonight ? Could some kind individual point me in the tight direction. TIA.

Think we will see this line up:

Robles
Coleman Stones Mori Baines
McCarthy Barry
Lennon Barkley Mirallas
Lukaku

With the aim of containing and hitting them on the break. If we can take it to 0-0 by the hour he'll get Deulofeu on to increase the chances of a counter-attack goal.

For me though, early goal for either side sees them progress to the final. Our confidence is already so, so low. Must be an all-time low over the past decade for sure.

That would be a daft assurance set by the board. Who cares about a dignified exit. We stand to lose some of our best players. Surely Rom can't be happy bagging all these goals to finish mid table simply to allow Howard a graceful exit?! Retaining Howard make no sense in any context mate. Don't get me wrong, Howard has been a great servant to the club, surely dropping him to the bench and allowing him to wind down is dignified enough.
I'm not saying the board have acquiesced on the specific issue of Howard, just that if they've given Martinez assurance about his future if certain targets are met then he will feel emboldened to carry on his pattern of team choice for the league and cup competitions.

That's fantastic mate, unfortunately I wasn't here to see those days and that team - I was only two months old when we last won a trophy! And i'm desperate for us to win something.

But like you said, it's patience that's key. I suppose some people are sick of waiting, but for the life of me how people can say that we're not an exciting side or we're dreadful and Martinez needs to leave is beyond me.

I just think we're on the cusp of having a really impressive set-up through the entire club. The type of players we're bringing in - the Moris, the Besics, McCarthys, Lukakus and Cleverleys who are all capable of slotting straight in to an entire club mentality and style. This side itself may not be the side to achieve what we think they are capable of. But that doesn't mean that the club isn't capable of achieving something with the style that this side is setting in place.
yeah it's different generation and different expectations and I can only guess what fans want to see now. All I can say is that expectations were so low in the 80s that a handful of us went to Wembley to watch some exhibition match cos we thought we'd never go there with Everton. You just never know.
Can't be great seeing no mark teams buying titles and cups when you've not seen Everton get much more than a sniff of success but anything we do win will be all the sweeter if we enjoy the ride and do it with style.
I grew up with reds in the workplace drifting between arrogance and whining if anything goes wrong. Whatever happened I didn't want to end up like them.

Mirallas is out tonight think we might see cleverly on the left

Just read that article mate - I remember reading it at the time but I think it's doubley relevant now. Well worth everyone giving it a read I feel!
One thing not in the article that occurred when reading it was how a few of those young players were taken away from the stick and the limelight and got to make their mistakes and learn each other's games in decent competitive matches under a great reserve team coach. Doesn't seem to be a luxury that's there now. Loans out are fine but they are not part of the set up and still likely to be under pressure.
RatclIffe in particular seemed unlikely to survive the pressure and abuse without his shift under Harvey.
