I think one point has to be taken into consideration is that when United got battered by barcelona they were the victim of the five foreigner rule , schemichel , irwin etc could not play so that was a big handicap , not saying we would have won mind , different era is difficult to judge Liverpool had a great team in the late 70s and 80s but the competion was far different compared to today , i think by now we will see if city can finally win it , i think only bayern might stop them
English clubs were at an advantage pre 90s with this rule. If you were British you were not classed as a foreigner. Italian sides for example, they had to field at least 7 Italians iirc. Im not 100% sure on this.

Yeh but giggs was their only British player from outside England

The great Ajax and Bayern Munich teams of the 70's, were also in decline when the rs started winning those european cups. There was no AC Milan side of Maldini Baressi Van Basten and Rijkaard around either. Uniteds champions league wins in 1999 and 2008, were a bigger and better achievement, because the competition was harder to win. The rs in the 70's and 80's, had no group stages to deal with. It was way easier to get to a final.
I suppose the counter argument to that is if the old format was still in place (only champions could enter the competition) then the rs wouldn't be able to crow about their 2 CL successes, & United fans wouldn't be able brag about being the only English side to have won the treble.

Swings & roundabouts.

A rancid 1st half performance again , every cross Brighton look like causing mayhem , Lindelöf again proving how inept he is in the air , i think i would take a draw right now ffs

A bit fortunate tonight better 2nd half but bit lucky with 2nd goal , with Martial out and Rashford looked injured again , but move and the game in Spain on Thursday lets go for it in this competition if we can play our best we can get to the final at least i think and hope

Can I ask an honest question?
Would you not be better posting this on a utd forum?

Back then you had to be the best side over 42 games to be in European Cup, now you can be the 4th best side after 38 games to get in it. Sometimes there were better and stronger sides in the UEFA Cup. It can be easier to progress in the CL format now, you can lose three group games and still qualify for ko stages.
