If we had signed players other than Delph, G'Bamin, and Kean that actually made an improvement to the team Silva might still have had a job.

Not one of our new signings was ready to walk into the first 11 and improve it.

That's on Brands. Silva didn't do a great job with what he had but I do feel Brands let him down in the summer.
Maybe, just maybe, Brands remit was NOT to keep Silva in a job....... Maybe that was Silva's remit...... Maybe Brands has a different task which is to build a squad for the future not get results week on week... just a thought...

You just have an agenda and refuse to change ,there is no debate with you as you won't listen .Even the fact Ancelotti is playing some players when he has an almost full squad still doesn't appease you .I am 71 and proud of the fact that I am willing to change and listen every single day ,in fact I love it when I learn something new or hear a better argument for/against any topic ,that for me is what life is about ,not having an unchanging opinion no matter what the evidence to the contrary.
Be prepared for Schneiderlin and Siggy tomorrow .

Thats basically it. If a manager is unable to work to that remit, and wants lots of players bought with experience, in their prime he is not going to work out too well here.

Yeah why would the Director of Football make signings to help our manager improve on the league position from the year before?

Absolutely mad of me to suggest such a thing.

Where you not happy with the summer transfers at the time? when obviously Silva was still here.

Not particularly no.

I was happy with Gomes and Kean (though I didn't want him as our only striker because he was always going to need time and we needed someone with quality to come in and start straight away).

Delph and Iwobi didn't impress me at all. They were known quantities of middling English talent.

Like everyone else here I'd never even heard of G'Bamin.

That's an entirely fair summary. I find it strange that so many people act like we had some sort of blockbuster summer (other folks who act like it was some sort of horror show are equally hysterical). This summer was ok and may turn out to be better than that if Kean and Gbamin come good but they may not. Loads of people on here are putting Gbamin in best 11s on other threads but I very much doubt that any of them have seen anything other than the two games he played for us at the start of the season where he was, understandably as he'd just arrived, a bit meh. Like you I'd never heard of him before he rocked up.

Yep, I agree but it's Brands' job to sort this out.

I honestly don't have a clue with what he's supposed to do though

Stand outside Niasse's front door calmly pounding his fists until Oumar agrees to leave?

He found a club who wanted him, he set it up, and then Oumar himself said no

Not much anyone can do about that

I'm all for not putting Brands on this ludicrous pedestal that others have done, but lets be sensible here

You agree.. but still hold it against Brands? o_O
I agree that it's hard but I also understand that Brands is payed millions and has a seat on the board to sort this stuff out. At the moment he can't even shift them on loan with us seriously subsiding their wages. I'm not seeing the genius dof that others seem to see in him. His signings have been ok and his sales have been poor, he doesn't currently seem to be having the transformative effect many predicted at the time of his arrival. It's early days though and I'm hopeful we will see a rational plan for the playing staff emerge sooner rather than later.

Its not just about the quality of players, there are so many other reasons at least a couple of decent signings/players with some leadership capabilities were needed this window: -

1) Shake things up to try and improve the players culture of acceptance of defeat and underperformance.
2) To show Ancelloti we back him.
3) So we dont have to have a radical overhaul in the summer which will inevitably ruin the first half of next season.
4) To show the fans Lppol away, Newcastle home, dozens of other performances are not acceptable.
5) BECAUSE WE NEED BETTER PLAYERS IN EVERY DEPARTMENT OF THE TEAM

I'm not looking to crucify Brands, it is a difficult task. Some of my concerns relate to the timings of everything. In the days following Brands arrival we should have been looking to move the players that didn't fit the model we were aiming for with the squad but the approach seems uneven. Players like Sandro quite rightly have been out on their ear from the off but with other players, Niasse in particular, the lack of depth in the squad seems to have resulted in him being given the idea that he may have had a future. We should have made it plain that we would rather have a kid from the u23s on the bench than play unwanted players, this happens frequently at other clubs and is a powerful motivator for players to move on. Various posters have said that Everton are too nice in all sorts of contexts and I agree. We need to be more ruthless on and off the pitch and that needs to come from the top and in this case that is our dof. You are right that Niasse and Martina can dig in, fine, make things as uncomfortable for them as possible in the meantime.

You mean the Delph that started games for the current league champions, was not ready to get into our squad? You mean Gbamin, who did walk into our first 11 and got injured, you mean one of the most sought after strikers with potential in Europe, who was then not even played by Silva? I'm afraid you'll have to sharpen your argument because it is a little banal.
