2019/20 Marcel Brands

I think praise of Brands is warranted as he's pulled an excellent window thus far. Added to the stable of young players. Got out done deadwood. Probably not spent a great deal net.

In terms of CB I am led to believe everything was agreed for Tomori up till Luiz decided he wanted out.

Personally I like the fact we didnt panic and lay down for United.

I believe unless he has an absolute outstanding season, Zouma will be a blue next summer.

Good window for me. Got loads off the books either by perma or loan and that process is still ongoing as you can still off load to Europe untill their windows close. Brought in quality signings all of which will improve the team. Only thing he never managed was a centre back which was important and he is certain to rectify in January and the Manager is more than capable of working around and utilizing what he has got at his disposal until then. Most of his wish list has been fulfilled including a quality striker which was arguably the most important one of all. We never missed out on Zaha as we haven't even been in for him since that first bid at the end of July.

In's - GK - Jonas Lössl (Perma), RB - Djibril Sidibe (Loan with option to buy cheap), Midfielders - Andre Gomes (Perma), Fabian Delph (Perma), Jean-Philippe Gbamin (Perma), Alex Iwobi (Perma and can play mid or wide) and Striker Moise Kean (Perma).

Out's - Besic (loan), Pennington (loan), McCarthy (Perma), Broadhead (loan), Joe Williams (Perma), Gueye (Perma no choice), Lookman (Perma no choice), Bowler (loan), Robinson (Perma), Garbutt (Loan), Dowell (Loan), Virginia (Loan), Galloway (Perma), Sandro (Loan), Kenny (Loan), Jagielka (Perma), Williams (Perma),

Well done Brands, will do for me.

Putting the slight embellishment on what he actually said to one side, this was right after the Mainz match and before we signed Gbamin.

Not saying that he and Brands didn't want an additional CB cover to come in but I was simply making the point that any deal clearly had to be right for it to happen considering the situation with Zouma. I'm willing to bet that, in the grand scheme of things, that extra CB would've been low priority for them after Gbamin came in and certainly not as much as a priority as getting Zaha/Iwobi was.

Also just on Yerry Mina - think it's pretty clear that when we bought him last summer it was as a first-choice centre back, including over Zouma. He suffered with his fitness which is why Zouma started the season and kept his place on merit. Think the idea was always for Mina to crack on this season.
No mate. There is no embellishment, none at all. Silva literally said ‘the priority is the central defender. We cannot go through a tough season with Mina, Michael and mason.’ This was on Saturday, after Bremen not Mainz, and so after we had signed Gbamin. So your whole point is proven to be wrong, a centre half was THE priority just 4 days ago according to the manager. I also think it’s very naive to think Mina, Keane or Zouma was supposed to be a guaranteed first choice last year. We had the three of them because no self respecting team has one pair of centre halves who are expected to play every game, they have proper competition and will pick the best 2 for any given game. Until now that is, another first for the blues.

What. A. Man. In one day, if news reports are too be believed(and why would they not as they are so reliable), the fee agreed started at 40 million, dropped to 35 million, then ended up at 28 million.

Addressed every position except CB, and improved squad depth. If he made a good signing last summer in Mina then CB is almost already sorted. I think I most look forward to what he can do when hes not trying to plug gaping holes, and is just allowed to sign younger hidden talents and let them develop. Next summer if most of the signings pan out, we will really just be in the market for a backup CB and maybe a winger, thats it.

The lack of cover at centre-back could come back to bite the team, and I wouldn't say that he gets great prices for outgoing players, but the ones he's brought in have been largely excellent, and even the lesser lights aren't exactly terrible.

Overall, I'm a fan.

Unless things pan out like last season and we finish 8th despite good seasons for richarlison and Digne And So they decide they want to leave, and we have to start the whole bloody process all over again...

The one thing with resources being more stretched numerically, especially in defence, is there is a pathway for young players into the first team squad. They need to prove they are good enough to play for Everton. I hope young Gibson really grows from being around the first team set up.

Not a chance Dave.

Hes signed 14 players in his time here and people only wanna focus on what he hasnt done.

Every week his players will win us games and I for 1 wont let you miss a second of it.
"Not a chance" you say, as though you're wanting the ridiculous man-crush to continue.

Foolish thoughts of ye of little faith. Brands first season saw us improve our goal differential by a whopping 22. Throw in just half that improvement in Marco Silvas second year(people keep pretending that a completely new manager and system dont require time to settle) and we will be competing for 5th.

How odd that you go on about nauseating cults, when you have embarrassed yourself for over 3 years on here with your insistence on ramming your love of Martinez down everyone’s throats.
Nothing cultish about me criticising Martinez for being naive at the defensive side of the game, or for criticising him for ruining a player McCarthy forcing him back from injury ealry, or stating that it was right he left when he did. How is that me being part of a cult? Do you think a cult member would say that about a revered leader?

You obviously have no idea what a cult is.

I think praise of Brands is warranted up to a point. The window would have been almost perfect in many ways - we signed players in every position we were trying to.

But let's not gloss over the centre back thing. That's a huge gaping hole in our team now. I appreciate we had deals which fell through and were hoping to persuade Chelsea to sell us Zouma but we've had all summer to line players up there, and it really came down to trying to convince Man Utd to loan us Marcos Rojo?!

To me, we've seen Brands' first failure here with that centre back stuff.

But, credit where it's due, the rest of the window was a success. And pulling Iwobi out of the bag at the last minute after attempting to get our 1st choice in Zaha but refusing to go over our budget was really impressive IMO.

Been a solid window, we have the striker and RB we were after, but missed out on a CB. Let's hope they know Zouma will be pushing for a move in Jan and therefore no point paying over the odds for someone now.

This is the problem. We have shown over and over again that when the big boys come calling for our players, we roll over and have our tummy tickled.
