2019/20 Marcel Brands

The pedestal Brands is put on is unfair. I'm sure he is not bothered in the slightest by it but he is human and fallible.

I think failure to get another CB is a glaring black mark on his record, which with that exception, is pretty impressive to date. Impressive but not astounding.

But I like the guy and what he is trying to do. He is here is fix a mass of problems, some inherent from the Koeman/Walsh/Allardyce era and others which have been endemic at the club for 30 years. He has one of the most difficult jobs in football.

So there will be mistakes. He has overseen huge and on the whole positive, change in the squad in a 12 month period. Could have done better with outgoings and the fees gained, most certainly should have strengthened at CB.

Overall I think he is still doing a very decent job here entangling us from such a horrific mess. We need a CB in January most likely so we have to get through till then and deal definitively with that issue.
Agree with much of this. He's done well enough since his arrival.

Perhaps the only salvation from today's disappointing finale to the window, though, is that the nauseating cult of Brands will be knocked on the head.

That's Yerry Mina, Dave. The lid we paid Barca c.£28 million for but ended up spending most of the season unfit and not through his (or anyone at the club's) fault. That's the reason why Zouma was loaned so late and ended up playing most of the season over him. Luckily for us, Zouma himself turned out alright in the end.

I've also explained why it's likely the 'senior' loan we attempted didn't happen and why both Silva & Brands will think it's not the end of the world. We've had four CBs regularly getting minutes over pre-season and a fifth player, signed on Saturday, can also play there.
You’re genuinely trying to suggest that our replacement for Zouma is someone we already had who couldn’t get in the team? And make out it’s a good thing? What’s so hard about admitting we messed up? It doesn’t have to be the end of the world, it doesn’t make brands a fraud or whatever, but trying to make out like this is all fine makes us look like a brainwashed cult of brands. Silva is on record a week ago saying getting a centre half is a priority because we can’t go into the season with what we’ve got, and yet we are. Just admit it to yourself, brands isn’t infallible. He played poker with Chelsea and didn’t realise arsenal had a trump card to beat him with. He’ll learn from it, but he messed up.

Not a chance Dave.

Hes signed 14 players in his time here and people only wanna focus on what he hasnt done.

Every week his players will win us games and I for 1 wont let you miss a second of it.

How odd that you go on about nauseating cults, when you have embarrassed yourself for over 3 years on here with your insistence on ramming your love of Martinez down everyone’s throats.

Decent window in my opinion. Strengthened all areas we needed to except centre half which is a bit of a shame. Can only assume Silva is happy with the quality of Gbmamin and the youngsters to cover if necessary.

We’ve offloaded more deadwood and brought in more younger players who, whether you like it or not, will have good resale value as players will be sold if a satisfactory offer comes in.

I’ve never really rated Iwobi but he clearly fits the mould the coaches are after.

Pressure on Silva now to deliver this season. Up the blues!

Putting the slight embellishment on what he actually said to one side, this was right after the Mainz match and before we signed Gbamin.

Not saying that he and Brands didn't want an additional CB cover to come in but I was simply making the point that any deal clearly had to be right for it to happen considering the situation with Zouma. I'm willing to bet that, in the grand scheme of things, that extra CB would've been low priority for them after Gbamin came in and certainly not as much as a priority as getting Zaha/Iwobi was.

Also just on Yerry Mina - think it's pretty clear that when we bought him last summer it was as a first-choice centre back, including over Zouma. He suffered with his fitness which is why Zouma started the season and kept his place on merit. Think the idea was always for Mina to crack on this season.

Getting one of the hottest talents in Kean for under 30m can only be seen as a successful window in my book and I think the Iwobi buy is pretty shrewd.
The CB isn't ideal but I think they placed everything on Tomori until Arsenal decided they wanted Luiz and then we got left scrambling and United would only deal with Rojo if we forked out stupid money for that garbage player.
We've got rid of deadwood and made some decent cash on players who weren't even needed apart from Gueye, Hopefully in January or next summer we can flex a bit after the big clear out we had this summer.

Digne, Gomes, Richarlison, Bernard, Mina, Delph, Gbamin, Kean, Iwobi.......got to admit that they are a class above what we are used to signing.
Long Live King Marcel.
Joking apart what is not to like with superior signings like that lot. The man doing doing a great job. They may not all turn out to be diamonds but we are not shopping in Lidl anymore.
