He replaced Gueye with Gbamin and I don’t think he left it too late for CB I think he made the mistake of waiting to see if Chelsea were going to let us have Zouma or Tomori and the Luiz move scuppered it last minute. Unlucky rather than lack of planning
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. It’s apt here, it’s not bad luck that scuppered us, it’s bad planning. If what you’re saying is true (I think it is by the way) then we were naive and over confident, it never occurred to us that anything could happen to change our plans but it could, and did. We should have had a contingency plan in place.

That's fair enough, then.

I don't agree about Gueye, though, unless there was a contract issue that I'm not aware of. Judging by Silva's comments, there was no desire to sell on the club's part, so no real reason to accept a low offer.
I suppose it comes down How much you rate gana. Some of our fans think we should be getting 50/60 mil for him.
Me I think 30mil with potentially to earn a bit more through add ons, is a good deal for a 30yr old With limitations

Seriously if we stink out the gaf at the start of the season I'm blamming everyone with the unreasonable negativity. A clean slate. Exciting players in. Can't be starting off like this. Back the defenders we have.

And you just know after setting the tone with negative vibes they'll only be too happy to boast about being right if thier negative energy manifests.

I think he got it wrong here, and maybe was a bit too naive. He did have various options though I think plan A = Zouma, B = Tomori, C = Smalling (knowing ManUtd could afford to offload a CB) and D = Rojo. What I guess he also didn't anticipate is that Ed Woodward would be so insane as to expect such big fees for his cast off CB's. How Utd couldn't see that a loan for Rojo were he might get game time would only see his value increase ahead of having a year left on his contract next summer rather than become worth next to nothing sitting on the bench for another year is quite frankly bonkers. Utd fans are incredulous themselves that they didn't do a deal (even a loan one).

How Woodward continues to coast along absolutely ruining their squad with seemingly no personal reflection, no learning, no reproach from higher up and no change to his role is baffling and hilarious to me in equal measure.

As Utd fans will tell you it's because he measured as if he was running a business rather than a football club. He has even stated than winning the Premiership or qualifying for CL does not necessarily impact on their ability to make money. The owners are happy as long as the accounts are healthy and player spedning can have a detrimental effect on your P&L in the short term, especially if you get it wrong.

400k a week's worth of Alexis Sanchez has to make him at least think "Maybe I'm not the best person to be picking the players?" however.

Completely unsubstantiated fiction! lol

You can clearly see the difference in how Brands operated when it came to signing players from Europe to players over here -

The ones over here like Docoure, Iwobi, Zaha and Zouma/Rojo/Smalling he left it late imo purposely to try get them at a cheaper rate and avoid the PL player tax as I like to call it.

Problem with that is he missed 3 out of 4 of them and only just got Iwobi at the death.

I hope he isn't stubborn and reflects on this window and how he needs to change tactic in future if he wishes to buy from a fellow PL club -

Offer the money what they want

Or

Start negotiations early enough to move on to other targets

Otherwise we'll continue to stumble in future windows.

It wasn't my hypothetical scenario, it was the poster I was replying to who imagined it. I was simply saying that even if his 'completely unsubstantiated fiction' turned out to be true, it wouldn't be down to bad luck, because it wouldn't.

Good, why pay above the true market value of an asset

It’s poor business

This is an excellent point I hadn't actually considered.

His success rate abroad compared to England really is chalk and cheese isn't it?

It could be as simple as underestimating the job at hand due to inexperience in the league. If so, he'll learn from it.
