His job is to bring fit and quality players in. Did he do that on the evidence so far this season?

Kean looks class, the rest I wouldn't buy in a firesale.
Iwobi looked well above everything else we have for that position and I think Gbamin will end up really good but apart from that I can’t disagree

Walsh was not a DoF but a Head Scout...who was over-ridden by a manager who CLEARLY had his paw prints on most of the tat through the doors.

The Koeman Era.

...you can’t be selective in saying the signings were not his because he wasn’t DoF, he was Head Scout and then saying all the current signings are down to Brands because he’s a DoF.

Accepting your point that Walsh was a Head Scout he was a dreadfully poor one. Gueye was a terrific signing, I give him credit for that. I recall a picture of him in the stands watching Sandro. He’s in charge, he had the power of veto over Klaassen, he had the power of veto over all signings.

Allardyce wanted a PL striker, Walsh gave him Tosun (unless your selective mind suggests Sammy Lee was a big factor in bringing him in).

Let’s get it straight, the DoF is accountable for all signings because that’s his job. The DoF is accountable for all renewal contracts because that’s his job. Walsh gave Mirallas a new, big bucks contract that astounded lots of us on here, he gave Pennington a 3 year deal. He signed Bolasie on a 5 year contract, he renewed Besic’s contract.

A DoF is accountable for what happened under his watch. Walsh was paid £1m per year to be a DoF, he was awful.

I would say

Pickford??? Mina ??? Gbamin ???? Kean ????

Questions about all our spine.
What exactly are you saying? Pickford has been good and saved us points alone already. Mina has been solid and Kean is promising. Gbamin getting injured is Brands fault?

...good point. The DoF/Manager relationship is key, they have to be on the same page, they have to agree the team model, they have to agree the transfer strategy.

Koeman/Walsh apparently initiated their own transfers (Walsh said they did this). Walsh and Koeman then had the power of veto. I suspect Walsh signed off all transfers, regardless of who initiated them. It resulted in a disjointed approach, both men signing players, Walsh did not use his power of veto for the better of the club.

I get the impression (and it’s only an impression), Brands and Silva are on the same page but Brands is very much in charge. They agree the way of playing, they agree the ‘type’ of player Silva needs to fit the team model. Brands goes and finds those types, Silva agrees the target, Brands makes it happen.

Much more integrated than Koeman/Walsh and Allerdyce/Walsh. A transfer strategy.

What about tactics...who decides that pre game and in game?

Are Brands and Silva telepathic?

What if Silva has never seen a player that Brands wants to sign? Do they go scouting together? If so can you link me a picture of Brands and Silva together scouting a player?

That's just abstract, non-real world nonsense. To believe Koeman's paw prints weren't all over Klaassen, Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin, Bolasie etc (all players he either managed before or expressed admiration for prior to their purchases) is staggering.

As for Walsh having the power to veto Koeman's decisions, I give you Moshiri's words: "Koeman is Koeman - he does what he pleases" - Moshiri's words to Jim White in a TalkSport interview. Do you really believe Walsh could over-ride Koemageddon?

....his job was to override, that’s what a DoF should do. He was paid £1m per year to manage the transfer of players and awarding of new contracts. Koeman wasn’t there when Tosun was purchased and I doubt Allardyce progressed that deal because he rarely played him when he arrived.

I remember seeing him in the stands watching Sandro, Keane is slow as a tug boat and weak minded. I can only think of Gueye and arguably Pickford who are successes from the Walsh era. Nothing he did here suggests he’s even a decent scout. Regardless, he was a dreadful DoF, there is no doubt about that.
