Zouma was not better than what we have now. That’s pure revisionism. He was largely average for us last season but finished with some decent form. Over the turn of the year he was completely useless.

Gueye went up a level under Silva no doubt about it. So we sold him at his highest value and reinvested in a younger player (who sadly got injured).

Keeping Gueye and paying over the odds for Zouma are not the sort of commercial decisions we can make as a club if we want to progress long term. Brands is working to a plan but just because we lost a game doesn’t mean the plan isn’t the right one.

There seems to be a complete lack of appreciation from some of the scale of the task at hand when Brands took over. To put it into context, some of the best players from the 17/18 first team are now no longer considered even good enough for a squad place by a lot of our fans (Walcott, Coleman, Baines, Davies, Tosun).

So Brands was looking at not only overhauling the first team, but overhauling an entire premier league squad. That’s how poor the players were. Martina Jagielka Williams Kenny all played a lot in defence, Baningime Schneiderlin Rooney Klaassen, Mirallas, Lennon, Calvert Lewin, Niasse. I don’t need to carry on with the names, we all know them.

Since his arrival we’ve brought in a completely different standard of player and largely done it within a sensible commercial structure. We can all isolate one transfer and moan about it ‘wtf did he sell Gueye etc.’ but the reality is we can either carry on this road and see the dross get pushed out and the likes of Digne Richarlison Kean Gomes come in, or we can keep moaning and hope he goes all Steve Walsh and lavish 60 mill on Callum Wilson because he’s scored over 10 prem goals, give 30 year old Gueye a new contract on mega wages, splash 40 mill on Marcos Rojo because he’d be marginally better than Holgate and because the baying fans demand it.

Fortunately Marcel seems to be very sure of his direction and so far is presiding over the best period of recruitment at Everton since Moyes. OMG he hasn’t completely reversed 5 years of torrid recruitment in 3 windows, get him out.

I hope he does well for us, but the situation now is that he was bought as a bang average forward.

Iwobi was brought in as a creative midfielder and he's a very good creative player
