2020/21 Marcel Brands

He's been a disaster. In any measure you care to use, he's been a disaster: overhaul of the academy; continuity of managerial (type) appointments; continuity of playing style; selling players; buying players for good value.

A mid-table team he inherited; he's delivered a mid-table team in his first two seasons. Spending the kind of cash he's spent, that's just not on. To reward him with an extension is at the very least bizarre; at worst an insult to Evertonians. It's basically telling us all and the outside world it's the plan to stay a mid-table team.

No matter what the arse-licking Everton journalists asigned to the club say in the Echo or Athletic, it is NOT a coup to retain Brands, it's organisational failure.

DaveK in Marcel Brands criticism shocker.

It’s almost like you don’t like the role itself.

Defend his time here....
I’ve seen how your pattern of discussion goes mate. Anything good gets attributed to the manager and anything bad to Brands. I’m all set not going on that complete twaddle of a Merry-go-round you pull out every few weeks.

And no, this doesn’t mean I can’t point out the good and bad aspects of brands, it means I’ve seen your mental gymnastics of reason devoid assumptions you pass off as facts, and I’m not going down that culdesac to bang my head against a brick wall as so many others do.

Oh right, so you cant defend him then.

Thanks.

Except that assumes performance in a vacuum. It’s possible for us to have improved and our league position not because other teams have improved, too. This season is incredibly competitive, at least from 2nd in the league down.
It's the same thing really. His job has to be to improve us relative to our rivals. If he doesn't do that he isn't really improving us at all.

Really struggle to see how anyone thinks hes done a brilliant job. At best hes done alright, the squads at a similar level to when he came in.

I think some people would rather have Allardyce managing that 17/18 squad than Ancelotti managing this one. Any who looks at that 17/18 squad and thinks that we didn’t need a long painful turnaround job is not in reality unfortunately. That for me was one of our worst squads in our premier league history but the 8th place finish has disguised that now so people will cry that there’s been no progress. That Arsenal game when Aubemayang scored about three offside goals was honestly one of the lowest points I’ve ever felt about us as a premier league side. I thought we were the worst side int he division at that time with no clue how to play football.

To be fair, he did say "similar level".

On paper we have a vastly superior team now, but it isn't showing to reality - and it's just so bloody slow.
