2020/21 Marcel Brands

I’d love to sell my old VW Polo for a million pounds and then buy a new Porsche for a cheaper amount but for some reason I can’t find a buyer for the Polo. I should just ignore those market laws and get it sold and buy the Porsche anyway. Brands out.

So is Brands the Polo? If he is out who is the Porsche equivalent to bring in?

I'd say that makes him a potential success, not a success.
If you had a year end review and you bought in a player for nothing who you could sell for £5m right now..... Would you let your boss say "hmm well I'm not sure we can give you credit for that"

Let's face it nkounkou and Branthwaite could get sold this summer and we would be quids in...... Brands has done his job well in this regard

But then it is replacing them and how much would they cost.

If you took a longer term view:

left back options when Brands took over:

Baines
Martina
Garbutt
Antonee Robinson

Left back options now:

Digne
Godfrey
Nkonkou

Which list is better for both the manager and the accountants?

That was not a Martinez signing. Inside intel on that.
That’s fine, but he also wasn’t a Brands signing. Inside intel on that.

The fact he hasn’t found a club as a free agent suggests it was an impossible job to sell him. I think some of the others are in that category as well. You might as well blame Ancelotti for not winning the CL this year as well. Impossible things are well... impossible.

I think we all agree that recruitment has to improve from where we’ve been. A huge amount of investment has been wasted and the squad is paper thin as a result.

Brands has made some good buys and some turkeys. I suspect that whether a player is an Ancelotti or a Brands signing, it is easier to attract better players when Ancelotti is the manager.

I think Brands...and EFC, got lucky with Godfrey.
iirc, we sent Branthwaite out on loan, somebody got injured and we were left short and we got him in as a replacement...came on in the derby did well, did not so well in his next game.
Played LB in the wall of 4, been doing well ever since.
One of those that grow into whatever level theyre put up to

2nd season will see how good he does

I like the cut of his jib so far

Yeah my point is really that there's very little evidence to say Nkounkou would be sold for £5m, but nevermind.

Im not saying you are doing this, but there are numerous other posters who can rationalise away every success of Brands and then not accept any mitigation for his failures.

So Richalrison Allan James are all managerial signings, but Iwobi Delph and Bernard are definitely his.

Walsh/Martinez gets credit for DCL and Holgate but Brands first of all gets none for giving them the room in the squad to develop, but gets blame for not buying players in their positions who would actually have stopped their progress.

He got lucky with Godfrey, but people don’t accept he was unlucky that Gbamin and Gomes both got career altering injuries at the same time.

We expected unknown players, and when they arrive in Branthwaite and Nkonkou they’re not the right type of unknown (e.g a South American superstar that all the top clubs missed out on but we pick up for buttons despite international rules making that almost impossible)

He’s done some good things, and he’s made some mistakes. The overall trend in my view has been a positive one with better players now joining the club than the ones who leave which wasn’t always true in the period between Moyes leaving and Brands joining. Compared to 17/18 our best players are better, our manager is better, squad value is better. We are in a better position overall whether Allardyce’s odd 8th place finish obscures that or not.

But then it is replacing them and how much would they cost.
You are missing my point ... Brands is operating us as a profit making outfit where we can - which offsets the cost of having to buy proven quality with little sell on value.

The wasted millions on bolassie, Klassen, Walcott etc need him to get a supply chain of young players who either make it of get sold at a profit. He's doing that.

Virginia? Silva/Brands in 2018 i thought...
He was talking about Keane.
Bernard & Iwobi are better squad options than what we had when Brands took over.
Both have had some (even if just a little) input into what we have done this season
I think it would have been better to use Lookman and Vlasic than to bring in these two, even just from a financial standpoint.
It’s one thing paying too much for players we have who are playing. It’s quite another shelling out tens of thousands of pounds every single week on numerous players who weren’t even kicking a ball for us. Most of them are now out of the squad or off the payroll on loan. When he arrived in 17/18 we had a huge number of players doing nothing eating up wages.
Bernard has barely featured in the last 18 months, and Delph and Kean have barely kicked a ball for us since joining.

That's without addressing the complete lack of cover (or even a reliable starter at right-back or right-wing) in key positions, or the fact that Gomes and Iwobi are constantly getting dropped / ragged off the pitch. Oh, and now King is here; another who doesn't get a sniff.

I don't think Id be calling for Brands to be sacked if his contract had more time to run, but I think it'd be a mistake to retain him.

Godfrey worth a small fortune already. Don't be surprised to see pep put the feelers out for him - he's Kyle Walkers better replacement.
