2020/21 Marcel Brands

23rd May 2018 - Brands' stated plan for the club on joining:

"I think it is important that he [the manager] wants to work in the new philosophy, the new strategy of how we want to work with a Director of Football. I think it is important that he creates the environment for the long-term, and I think it is important that he is a modern coach. If you think about what Everton’s plans are, I think a modern coach will fit into that profile.

"Then his philosophy and how he wants to play is important. I think it has to be a coach who wants to work with young players.

"I have watched several Everton games and I have looked at the players. I also saw some who were on loan to other clubs but if we are going to take decisions about players it is important the manager is involved because he is going to work with them every day.

"I will take care of the long-term strategy but the first job now is to find a manager as soon as possible and straight away go to work with the squad.
"

Can anyone say they think that plan has worked out or is in the process of working itself out?

He's a hologram, not a man who lays down "the new philosophy". The long term strategy he spoke of remains a pipe dream. We're no further forward in having a new identity than we were when Allardyce was sacked.

Brands has to answer for those fundamental failures in the task he set himself.

Why would Brands tell Carlo Ancelotti how he should be putting his team out?

This philosophy stuff is getting misconstrued. I think Brands is setting a strategy based on profiles of recruitment (e.g Big Bang let’s buy everyone circa Chelsea 04, or analytics based buy low sell high and the manager develops) I believe that sort of approach is what Brands is referring to as a strategy or philosophy for Everton. It’s been fairly clear what that is from the moment he arrived.

Clear out the legacy FFP problem, increase the quality of the squad, reduce the wage bill, establish us in European football for moving into a new stadium.

There hasn’t been anything mentioned about timeframes, there hasn’t been anything mentioned about budgets (Kenwrights infamous 5 mill a season for Moyes), there hasn’t been anything about basing it around youth development (85p in every pound to Finch Farm). There’s been nothing except those broad aims outlined time and again by the club.

I think some people think Brands needs to tell Ancelotti to play 433 so all the academy players can play it also, and then we select a manager who also plays 433 when Carlo moves on. That’s insane. Every single manager is different and being their own philosophy. Hence why no one has followed what Pep was able to do at Barcelona despite the lot of them trying to play the same formation. The one who did have so success was Enrique who just put together three world class strikers and played on the counterattack, the exact opposite of what Pep did.

From an academy perspective we need to produce modern footballers who can play in multiple positions in multiple systems so they can be in the first team regardless of the managers tactical preferences.

The brief is different at any football club. At PSG it’s probably spend whatever it takes to win the CL but you’ve got to keep Neymar and Mbappe happy. At Barcelona there’s undoubtedly various considerations involving Messi and now also some very stringent financial ones. At Spurs it was to keep them in the top 4 on a budget whilst the stadium was built, same for Wenger at Arsenal for a period. At Chelsea it’s just to win by any means. Madrid is the same but there has to be an aesthetic to it and also trying to use Spanish players etc. The philosophy at the Basque clubs are even more unique.

The one at Everton seems quite clear to me. It gives the manager pretty much full control of the playing style. There’s constraints on budget around FFP and there’s expectations of progressing to European football but no hard timeframes for it. It’s not as cut throat as Chelsea’s may be but that’s sadly the culture of our club these days. As long as the project isn’t threatened by relegation, a manager will have time to build.

That’s the philosophy and strategy that Ancelotti has agreed to work within. Total control of on pitch issues and the freedom to build. There’s no scenario I can see though where either him or Brands would expect Brands to dictate to him what style and formation of football he should play.

Seen his recent comments, @davek? Thoughts?

“We’ve begun our preparations [for the summer transfer window], we have two or three targets and believe that’s all we need to compete for the top positions.

Despite one or two deals not working out as planned, Gbamin and Fabian Delph have been unlucky with injuries, we feel we’ve been hugely successful over the past 3 years.”

(On Juan Mata): “He’s a player we like, there’s been discussions about many players, but he’s definitely one we like.”

(On right-back position): “Look, we have Seamus. An incredible professional, he’s our leader. Let’s not forget Jonjoe who we have back from Celtic.”

Hopefully he's been briefed by Ancelotti to keep his trap shut. Ancelotti never gives anything away. Since he's been at the club we've signed players that nobody knew about and he gives nothing away in interviews. Previously we'd spend months courting a player, it would be in the press and then Spurs would come in at the eleventh hour and sign them.

Was going so well until the Mata comments.

If we see Kenny in a first team shirt next season we might as well throw in the towel. It's been clear to everyone that we've needed a new RB for 5 seasons and the fact this hasn't been sorted is criminal, and the fact we'd even consider bringing Kenny back into the first team fold is damming.
...indeed...

Oh god you'll never believe what's happened lol someone in the Finch Farm corridor said to Marcel on Friday "everyday's a Bank Holiday for you, you cube-headed bell" and he's taken it literally lol already in the Maldives and his Out Of Office says "until 01/09/2021" lol easy mistake to make I guess
