Marcel Brands

Not nice to see really. Why do things always have to get like this before anything happens. Why can't the club just get a plan together

Thoroughly depressing night
No it's not. I don't like a bloke being screamed at to get out in his face, same with Benitez btw. It doesn't reflect well but the fan has a right to be very angry even if it'd be better for them to have a quick reasoned conversation and then you might get a response from Brands.

That being said, the way he scoffed and turned away reeks of arrogance.

At least he took the abuse. Don't know what he says back to him. Looks like an arrogant response at the end. Tosser.

Mr Shouty: "get them out Brands"
Brands "who are the players".

lol lol lol lol lol

FFS that's it right there - if you wonder how that feller can keep drawing that salary there he's just answered it. He's barking 'kin mad.

Oh he does.

He wanted to sign Dumfries. We had a deal agreed with the player, sort of with PSV, didn't have the cash though but think the plan was to go with a loan to buy with obligation.

Benitez didn't want the player when he came in. Inter then came in for Dumfries and we didn't have the cash to compete.

He took Patterson to benitez, benitez didn't want to go too high - I agree on that tbf btw. Brands' next choice was AMN, who isn't even a RB.

Now, the issue is Brands clearly in that circumstance hasn't come up with acceptable, cohesive targets. I like Dumfries, but him and Patterson are nothing alike and AMN is nothing alike either of them - there's no profile, no plan or structure. Just random picks.

But he did want a RB this summer. Benitez ran the rule and said no to the choices he was presented with.

TBF that sort of assumes that Brands wasn't told why Benitez didn't want Dumfries - if he said he wanted different type of player (or even just a British one) then switching to Patterson makes more sense, as does AMN if Benitez said he wanted that sort of player. Dumfries and Patterson would both have represented development players with a potential resale value mind.

That said though the relationship being like that makes Brands (or any director of football) pointless; if it is ever going to work he has to be the one buying the players.

I'm not defending anyone screaming in someone's face and I dont really like it, but this is what happens in an emotional game like football when you ignore fans and appear to have no accountability for decision makers.

Benitez needs to be replaced just so everyone can cool off because this toxic atmosphere will eventually get us relegated. There is no doubt about that.

Brands: "Is it only the players?"
Guy: "Ya what?"
Brands: "Is it only the players?"
Guy: "It's the board right through, it's everyone *something*, it's crap."

As soon as the guy said "it's the board right through" Brands already started to walk away.
Sounds like it’s a Brands v Benitez power struggle of sorts. If he was saying that it sounds like he was trying to coax out the guy to say the manager. I’d bin Brands straight away.

I agree with this. Brands would have been far better turning up his skinny jeans and just walking down the exit. You can't really have a rational discussion with somebody effectively attempting an Omicron superspreader event, such was the bile and invective being propelled from that chap's gullet. The fact he confronted the bilious fan suggested a sense of lèse-majesté on the part of Brands. The guy is not used to being held accountable, and especially not by projectile spewing oiks.

That is part and parcel of where we are now. No identity , no way of playing and no ideology.

If you looked back at all the money spent and saw some of that in place then maybe you can sympathise with the club. They are trying to bring in a style or profile that they see us in the future having.

Yet it's not there. When you look at all our wide players we have bought, none of them are the same. Our CMS don't fit together on their skills , our centre halves are just random players put together.

It is not about buying bad playersz it's buying players for the sake of it, as you identify in your post. There is nothing for the next manager to work with each time , never mind mercenaries , we just have a squad of random players being asked to play a new way every season but have no idea of how to play as a team from the get go.

That's why Martinez had such a great season , because the majority of the squad knew how to play together. Once that changed and too many new faces for a new style were introduced, we fell apart and never recovered.
