…..Benitez wants control of everything, we all know that would be the case. Managers have worked cordially with Brands, Ancelotti will have had regular conversations which resulted in the likes of Doucoure coming in.

Brands didn’t want Benitez, he didn’t rate him as a coach and knew he wouldn’t work with him, even cordially. I imagine Brands wanted Benitez out after this run of results but Moshiri wouldn’t sanction the sacking so Brands has walked.

Thats my take. Benitez will be going down to BMD after training to run that as well.

Not a fan of the dof tbh. Unless its with the full backing of the manager you can get a scenario where a manager doesnt fancy a player but has to play them. Or the dof sways the manager(godfrey?) And they have little option to play them.
One thing i always liked with Moyes was he bought his players. And character was always a part of moyes signings.
Did this club end up with alex iwobi because of a director of football?
The manager should deal with all signings for me. Except when the paperwork needs doing. And a secretary can do that.

I didn't call you deluded. I said as much myself. I just think the well has dried up, I think that's where we differ.

And in that case I think we've, from the evidence so far here and the last five years of Benitez's career, handled the wrong manager to 'steady the ship'

All he does is call people out and use excuses and his mates in the media. He did it at Newcastle, who were tosh under him, but he just said he had no money and blamed Ashley and the fans lapped it up (Ashley was, of course, partly to blame).

But I think Benitez takes us down, I really do. At first I was willing to say he might be able to prove me wrong but the evidence of all season has me realising I was right to trust my instinct. I'm annoyed like as I had the same instinct with Brands in 2018 and 2019. Thought he treated this job like it was PSV and he could just get through windows leaving us short in key areas and we'd still be fine

I think personally the money will still be there but only once our FFP losses/worries are gone and the wage bill is cut.

I think next summer we'll have a bit to spend but will probably be another summer after that before talk of £100+ million budgets come back and that will likely hinge on either sales or if FFP does change to the salary system and we sort the books out.

Tbf to Benitez 2 of his 3 main signings this summer have been decent squad additions for the outlay paid so im intrigued to see what he does.

I know people laugh at that Longstaff rumour but im sure he's one of the top 5 players in the league for pressing the opposition - for a few million quid I would have him over Davies, Gbamin and Gomes off the bench any day of the week regardless of if he isn't a spectacular player.

Whilst the budget is small we have to navigate the best we can.

If the rumours are true then Brands has been made into is a scapegoat. Don't get me wrong, I'll be quite happy if he's really gone as the DOF position is a disaster. But it'll make no real difference in the end. Not with the serial losers club like Kenwright and Baxendale and the rest of the stupid squad on the board continuing to hang around the club like the sword of Damocles. Benitez will go before the season is out, or maybe next year and another fall guy will go after that while the real problem lingers on.......

he's in the top 5 for PPDA (presses per defensive action), but Allan is up there too.

Doesn't actually win the ball back from that a lot.

I agree, Gray has been a good addition (though is one of the players unhappy btw) and Townsend will work but is being overused because Benitez loves him - he's been crap lately because he's a very average player who shouldn't be playing every game at the expense of the system. When used correctly he is good though and on a free he was fine.

…I think Moyes is a great example of a autonomous Manager. The number of times you’d be watching a vague midweek match on TV and cameras would show him in the stands watching. Amazing dedication backed up by an eye for a player. Millwall on a Monday night he spotted Cahill.

i don’t see many with that dedication & the game is much more global now, it’s difficult for a Manager to be a brilliant coach and excellent in the transfer market. I think that type will be few and far between. Ancelotti said he’d never heard of Doucoure.

Benitez doesn’t even watch the U23s, I think you’re more likely to find him in Caldy Chippy on a Monday night.
