Hang on, you’re the one making out that Mourinho is currently a top manager winning trophies right now?

I wouldn't say he's at the top like he used to be but I would still put him around Carlo's level who's slightly below the top tier at present but still better than the Potters and Nunos the world.

Mourinho still has it imo - had Utd finish 2nd in the table and im sure they won a trophy under him.

Didnt do great at Spurs but they are a basket case like ourselves.

Obviously not at the levels of his peak Chelsea days but would rather a has been than some wet behind the ears oink like Lampard who never had it to begin with!
They also finished 6th the season before when he put all his eggs in the Europa League basket when the league form wasn't good enough - correct decision arguably but a side like Utd shouldn't be struggling for CL places if the manager is truly a "special one".

And they were again going nowhere the next season when he was sacked. Solskjaer coming in, winning 10 and drawing 2 of his first 12 games and them still only being 4th after that ridiculous run shows how far off pace they were under Mourinho once the cycle of him throwing everyone under the bus and completely alienating his squad had started.

Managed to cram his usual cycle into 17 months at Spurs and now starting his moody tantrums at Roma as well. The cycle gets quicker every job he has.

…surely Moshiri will have learned a lesson & go for somebody progressive. Benitez is supposed to be safe pair of hands, look where he’s taking us. Mourinho, no thank you very much.

But the question has to be Eggs can this team play progressive and if they cant can we afford the £150+ million squad revamp to sign players who can play that way?

Koeman and Silva tried progressive opem football - they got sacked after being in the relegation spots.

Ancelotti tried it and went ultra defensive when results nose dived.

Benitez is trying it to a lesser extent and results are nose diving.

This group of players can not do the basics to give someone like Potter the job and basically tell them to play open attractive football it won't work imo.

Until this squad is gutted which costs a lot of money we need a defensive/compact manager to get results out of this lot.

You could argue Benitez needs to basically stack the midfield and play 4 CB's like Ancelotti did to save his job because they aint very good.

….and yet they were very good after the first 10 games.

Good riddance to this total fraud. I can't believe what I've been reading on these pages since the news started to filter through that he was leaving that many fans view this as bad news.

For the supposed sole intellectual capital for the industry of football in our boardroom, in what way has he advanced the direction of our football club? Why has it fallen upon Benitez, three and a half years since Brands walked through the door, to make some changes to the absolutely pitiful medical department? Why are we will still giving giving coaching jobs to former players in the youth teams like they're free sweets? Make all the excuses you want for his miserable transfer record, he has failed against every single line of his job description.

As for that Echo article, despite it clearly being penned by Brands himself, if any of the allegations against Moshiri are true then its clear what we needed from our Director of Football is some resilience, and failing that, somebody to stand by their own principles and walk away with their reputation and dignity intact. Brands is guilty simply by association if nothing else, and the fact he signed a second contract having experienced every brain fart Moshiri is capable of just condemns him further.

Funny how the issue of Moshiri meddling was never considered a problem during the Steve Walsh days, or has been offered as an excuse for or by Walsh since. Do people really believe that Walsh, having never worked as a DoF or club exec before, was given complete autonomy in the transfer market and Marcel Brands who arrived with a storied reputation was immediately tied to a radiator and bypassed at every opportunity? This is despite the fact Brands was appointed to the board, Walsh was not. Brands was rewarded for his failure with a new contract whilst Walsh was given a one way ticket to football abyss.

The excuses just don't wash. Yes we have an absolute clown for an owner but one of the very first things Moshiri did when he arrived was establish the DoF position, and the very first candidate that we identified was Marcel Brands who turned us down. The role was effectively made for him and a way for Moshiri to delegate power to a person with proper intellectual capital.

We need to make serious changes to our football structure and we have an opportunity to do that now that one of the BIGGEST problems of our club is gone. We need Barrett-Baxendale to follow and to properly empower a CEO-Manager dream team. Obviously this doesn't include Benitez.

It is mad, he has been awful for years and the fans have all said so, he leaves and becomes some sort of martyr to loads on here.
