Marcel Brands

He looks hopelessly like a Klassen to me, constantly hiding from the ball, on the periphery of play all the time, certainly doesn't have the trust of his teammates because they very rarely give him the ball when he is available.

I've only seen him about 5-6 times mind, but nit once as he done anything of note except to look completely out of his depth.

I cant cope me if Brands signs another "slow, technical" player.

Thanks for Doucoure & Mina now please do one you fraud.

I remember Dennis Bergkamp going to Inter Milan and flopping and yet...

The point I am making is that there is no point comparing Van De Beek with Klaassen - you might as well compare him with Bergkamp. All three were blond and all three were failures for their first club abroad after leaving Ajax. It happens.

Regardless, I reckon there is a very fine player there in VDB in the right hands. The incompetent sentimentalist who is currently managing Manchester United is, in my view, not a great coach of a player. I'm very interested to see how Donny fares over the coming seasons... It seems to me that that wonderful Ajax side was broken up three years too soon. Those players - VDB, De Ligt, and De Jong should have been allowed mature first, but Ajax cashed in. Maybe they knew something. Only time will tell.

Your not wrong about Bergkamp flopping at Inter, but his quality was evident for all to see at the time.

I'm not sure VDB has got enough in his locker to impress in the PL. Certainly wouldn't be a player I think we should be looking at.

But I know nothing at all so wouldn't listen to me ;)

I don't agree that Brands merely got out of the way. He played a big part in the negotiations.

Quite frankly, I'd rather it was Brands doing that. Rather than Bill 'crying down the phone to Ferguson' Kenwright and Farad 'Lukaku's mum consulted a voodoo priest' Moshiri.

If Ancelotti and Benitez have said to Brands 'I want this player' and Brands has then gone and got him, then Brands is doing his job in my eyes.
I suspect a club secretary paid a fraction of what Mr Brands is paid - and who doesn't need a stipend as club director - could have done Benitez's errands just as efficiently - with or without skinny jeans.

In the games I've seen him mate, he's never even had a run with the ball, took a man on etc so I wouldn't even be able to tell you if he travels well with the ball.

He gets it, passes it back to where it came from, rinse and repeat

Well, we're all speculating. I'm basing my opinion on seeing him in the Champions League and for his national team. While the CL is obviously a smaller sample size in terms of matches played, it's without question a far higher standard than the PL. He was glorious in that run to the semi-finals before Spurs mugged them at the death. Somebody at United saw something too, evidently. Mind you, they also saw something in Fred, so who knows...

He'll either be a one-season wonder (at Ajax) or the type of player Brian Clough and Peter Taylor would rehabilitate into a European champion.

Yep, I can't remember who they played before Spurs ( was it Juve??) but sure he played well anyway. Like you mentioned it was his timing of runs into the box that stood out.......but Klassen is/was also class at that unless an opposition stops those type of runs being useful. Look at the final Klassen played against Utd, he was absolutely dreadful but I'd convinced myself that must have been a one off as he'd looked so good for Ajax & Holland. Came to Everton and looked weak, timid, slow.....all the things I've seen on Donny (in the Limited games I've seen him for Utd).

To be fair to Donny, he does look like a choirboy so I can see where you're coming from.

I don't think it's as simple as your making out. Otherwise no one would have a Director of Football
