Who was the last manager we got from a league rival / same country that was actually a roaring success?

Royle in part , Kendall before him?

Maybe we should stop hiring these managers if most of them since the 80s have been crap

Tbf, every manager we've had since the 80s has been crap. Maybe we should just stop hiring managers all together.

That’s because we as fans have accepted mediocrity
People should have being congratulating Moshiri when he mentioned ( reportedly) Simeone not laughing our heads off.
Do you think any of the Sky 6 would consider Silva ?? Not a hope
It’s managers of that calibre we should be going after
Granted we may not get our first second or even our third choice but we would let the world know we are serious
If Moshiri / Usmanov throw enough money at it we will get a top class manager

I have to believe the board have been encouraged by Silva and his people to go all out for him. Otherwise why be so public? They must be confident. If not it's a mess.

As an addition the mediocrity came to the fore when coronation street actors took over our club and got his buddies on board.
Imagine if he had have sold to the Arabs when they wanted to buy.
We’d have Pep in charge

Joe was in the Championship, Oldham having been relegated the previous season.

And I am pretty sure Blackburn were too when we signed Howard from them.

So the answer is none :(

Unless Wednesday were in Division 1, old style, when we signed Harry.

The answer is Harry Catterick in 1961, he was the last manager we recruited from a team in the same Division that was a success.

As you said, Royle and Kendall were both managing in the 2nd Division, although Royle had only just taken Oldham down.

I think koeman kinda rocked the trend a little bit but his attitude and the wonderful transfer policy we have at the club gave him no chance to ever go anywhere. I mean Jesus we went into this season without a first choice striker , what chance did he ever have ?

But generally my point was that we go after these small time managers with all the talk of potential and it never works out for us. Moyes won nothing no matter how good a job you think he did or didn't do. Martinez took us massively backwards , Smith was the wrong man, Kendall 2nd and third spells were unsuccessful to say the least , royle did dip after the first full season and walker from Norwich speaks for itself.

So when you list the likes of Watford and Burnley manager is that not following the same suit ? I don't exoect us to go and hire pep or Jose or anyone to that level but this idea of us always hiring domestically, even now seemingly with silva. Silva might be great for us if/when he arrives but if he was to fail then it would be another modern day manager hired from around us that hindsight tells us was just greatly unambitious
