martinez -- short term approach?

Excellent post.

Again, in this very thread there are people who actually reply "their legs don't fall off at 30".What an absolutely naive mindset.

If we allow these players to stay at the club until their 30's and towards retirement then who will replace them?

Baines value as you highlighted will drop. Selling him can bring in 2 good players. Fellaini the same but his value will be stable for another season.
.
Its totally insane to be adding to this top heavy squad age rather than reducing it.

"Peoples legs don't fall off at 30"....dearie me!!

So are you suggesting that their legs do actually fall off?

It doesn't take that much to turn the situation around though. A couple of young signings and everything will start to look rosy again. It's not like we'll have to replace all of those players in one go. Over the next 5 years they will gradually be replaced by younger players. If someone like Fellaini needs to be sold in order for that to happen then so be it.

I'm not sure a short term approach is as negative as some make out. Every position in the league is worth a lot of money. I'd much rather us spend our limited resources on players who will improve our starting XI and increase our chances of improving now regardless of their age. Likewise I don't want those same resources spent on bringing in bench-warmers, I'd rather see our own home grown boys sitting there hungry for a chance. Like many I'm dubious of some we're linked with like Alcaraz, but because of his lack of quality not age. We have to live in the now, not the future, if not by the time some of these unproven prospects people want us to sign will be fighting to get us promoted from the Championship not challenging for the league.

So lets say Fellaini is sold, 2 young players come in. One for his position and another to replace an ageing player.

Then lets say Baines goes and 2 more come in

Thats 4 players in allowing Baines (on the list) and 2 others 30+ players to be replaced

This allows for now 6-8players (if kone and alcaraz sign) to still be over 30 years old and have minimal resale value + no more high saleable assets to generate funds to replace them.

Ok, so what is the difference in prize money between 6th-9th for example?

Is it big enough that 9-11 players values shrink but can compensate for that with a couple of league placings?

The answer to this is no.

I'd rather have one player who is arguably the best player in his position in Europe (and a very fit lad), then sell him for 2 good players. Although I understand your point it's not that cut and dried. Selling these players gives you less chance of attracting good young players, and more importantly every top side has enough old heads to guide the young lads. The day we start producing players for other clubs to enjoy in there prime is the day we may aswel give up.

Heres the thing though, lets say baines was sold (for example) potentially Oviedo and Garbutt could play left back allowing the money to be spent on a keeper / central defence / centre midfield / left wing / forwards...

How do we know that by signing 2 players of great potential for the fee we wouldnt have 2 future world class players even better than baines and also better for the team as a whole?

Excluding Goal keeper, we do if you include players aged 25

Keeper - no one

Left back - oviedo
Centre back - duffy
Right back - coleman

Centre mid - fellaini/barkley
Left mid - no-one
Right mid - mirallas

Centre forward - no-one

Thats for players with any gametime.

Anichebe is 25, Oviedo is also a Left mid

Oviedo should be a left back unless moyes playing him out of position now makes him a left mid...have it your way, now theres no left back in the side.

Keeper - zero
Rb - coleman
Cb - duffy
Lb - no one

Cm - fellaini /barkley
Lm - oviedo
Rm - mirallas

Cf - anichebe

Considering he's the best player to play for Everton since the 80's I think that would be unlikely. As I say I fully understand your theory, even more so as we are skint but I just feel it will hit us more then we think selling these players. One act of intention by the board in saying Baines is unavailable at any price will run confidence through the club.

I'd love to have a good go in the league next season with the addition of one centre forward and allowing our good players to express themselves. This team was ready to take off until it had the reigns pulled on them last season
