2018/19 Mason Holgate

I don't think Stones ever got bullied, though. He hardly gave the opposition attackers a chance to do so.

People easily forget just how good Stones was.
Was my favourite Everton player when he played for us, especially in that second Martinez season I thought he was brilliant. I was gutted when we lost him. Holgate doesn't have the same class on the ball that Stones has.

The worst game I have seen him play Zouma was a touch better they were run ragged.........
They're both adequate partners for a dominant, combative centre-back, but as a partnership they're very vulnerable.

Zouma has the physical attributes, but hasn't played a lot of top level football for his age, and Holgate is better-suited to sweeping up.

I'd sell him on.

He's a good player, just not really good enough for us yet.

He's had so many runs in the side but has never claimed a place. When Stones had a run in the side he made it known he's the business. Holgate just fills a void when needed.

Hes our 4th choice CB mate, hes 21 years old, lets not write him off just yet.

Of course he needs to improve, show me a 21 year old that doesnt.

After bigging him up over the summer I am really disappointed in his last two games. Looked pedestrian when defending the 1st and 3rd goals. Looked like he was running in treacle. So lethargic.

Well there is this one French lad who is only 19...

But seriously I agree we shouldn't write off players like him Tom DCL etc yet. At the same time if we can bring in a different 21 year old like we did with Richarlison who improves us then I'm fine with doing away with Holgate.

Mbappe can and will improve.

As I keep saying, im more than happy to sell 95% of this current squad, but improvements need buying first.

I would agree that Stones was good on the ball; however, he was horrid in defense. I remember him routinely caught ball watching approximately 2-3 key moments per match; more often than not, resulting in us leaking a brace to the opposition.

It was horribly frustrating as a fan because you rooted for the lad and wanted him to come good. He’d spend most of the match looking outstanding only to make one or two massive errors that cost us a result.

30 yards from goal is not a high line. We've talked about this 800 times, we aren't doing a high press, we are running a counter scheme that's compressing the defensive zone like Simeone. Honestly, this is kind of fundamental counter attacking modern football, it's basic tactics. As I've said many times, go read about Simeone's tactics at Athletico if you want to understand what Silva is doing. There is a lot of information on how Silva wants to build out of the back and spring our OUTSIDE backs, too. Encourage you to read it.=.

We aren't pressing high, it's high relative to Sam's bunker in and hoofball approach, which is why individuals here think they are seeing a high line and my guess is why Holgate would state they are playing a high line. It's not Klopp's gegenpressing, it's not Pep's zonal / possession approach.

You had people on this forum suggesting we were playing at like midfield and it required our center backs to be Usain Bolt. Keeping in a consistent line 30 yards from goal is not high, nor does it require sprinters ability. You had folks on here suggesting we were playing possession football. You had folks suggesting we were instituting a high press. We aren't.
No need to tell me mate. I gave up arguing with you weeks ago. You'd better tell Marco he's not playing a high line though as he clearly thinks he is according to Mason.;)

If that wasnt a high press against West Ham then i dont know what it was...
