….big difference now is he’s playing for his football future, no circa £70k per week, no circa £300k pcm. We know he can probably afford to retire but it’ll matter that he wants a deal somewhere.

He’ll be available on a ‘free’, he’ll have his demands but they’ll clearly be considerably lower. I’ve never rated him but I will say that when it matters he usually earns himself a deal, it happened when he last came back from the Baggies and we failed to secure a CB on the last day of the window. He grasped that opportunity and has earned himself a fortune.

Its an example where football has lost since the 80`s. Back then players would bust their guts every game for a pittance of what average players like Holgate have been getting every week. Players played as long as they could back then and still had to get a proper job after their career finished.

Hollers now a regular fixture in the WBA XI. Wonder if he thinks he can do better once he's longer guaranteed 60k a week from next July.

Main thing is he's getting minutes and putting himself in the shop window.

Maybe though when he takes a step back at the end of the season, he'll say "I've had 2 good spells at WBA so maybe this is the best place for me".

He'd still get a decent wage (obviously not Everton size but still decent) and a chance to just get his career properly on track.

…I’d be safe in the knowledge that this thread might as well be in the ex-players thread. I know Thelwell offered Tom Davies a new deal but not even he would contemplate similar for Holgate.

True, we could miraculously go up so he would then be on lower Prem wages, he only in the squad because the two fave defenders are injured, he not doing too bad and deserves to keep his place.

Good to hear. I don't think he'll be in any position to demand anything more than 15k a week from anyone Sue. Hopefully you get promoted and he finds he's wanted there permantly
