Anyone blaming Holgate for the goal should ask themselves why Martina wasn't even in our half when King scored after running with the ball for 20 yards, and smilarly, why not 1, but 2 defensive midfielders, including apparently the best of his kind in the known galaxy, didn't get anywhere near him, and allowed him the 20 yards of space to run into in the 1st place.

The defence is a shambles at the moment with Martina, William's and Baines in the team, and with 2 anonymous defensive midfielders. We know Williams is in regardless, especially with Keane out, and Baines has even less competition for his place, so we are stuck with them.

Martina should be replaced by Kenny though. He showed more defensive nouse, aggression and positional sense in 20 mins yesterday than Martina has all season. Those saying Kenny has no experience, well, there's only one way he's going to get it.

Also, Koeman needs to decide which of the defensive mids and number 10s he wants to play instead of just playing all of them and hoping for the best.

Completely agree, I watched the highlights and my first thought was where exactly are our 'TWO' defensive midfielders whilst King is allowed all the time and space in the world to run on goal. Holgate might have committed too early but I don't really blame him for that goal.

If that was Williams it would be different though, lots of blame for the goal and holgate was the crucial part what was he is doing sliding like that very poor,he could turn out a very good player but let's not say he's not to blame.

He was very poor for the goal, but christ sake somebody else should have come across, as others have pointed out hes a young lad, but I thought he did reasonably well.

Thought he did well and would like to see him and Keane. Hope he gets a run at CB.

The goal was a classic case of a number of mistakes in succession - Martina out of position, Schneiderlin doesn't react to that, Holgate then trying to mark 2 players so can't get tighter to King and then instead of going with the run, goes to ground. It was a good finish from King but I thought overall Holgate had a decent game, as did Williams. I think the way our midfield is set up puts a lot of pressure on our defenders as the opposition have lots of time on the ball.

Im not having a dig at the lad. Thats the first time I can recall him playing centre half. I'd like to see him and Keane given a go together but he definitely needs to improve his positioning. Seems to ball watch a lot
Sorry. Thought you were mate. The kids a footballer who is already a decent defender, although not a natural right back. He is a bit lightweight at the moment and his positioning is not what you would expect from an experienced centre back. But both of these you would expect him to develop over the next couple of years together with his decision making.

His shortcomings are being highlighted, which is fair enough. We don't want smoked shoved up his arse like a lot of our other young players over the last few years. But what does annoy me are the people on here writing him off like he should be the finished article at 20.

For me, he needs to play in his natural position, centre back. Yes he will make mistakes along the way but he will learn quicker that way. Guarantee you that he'll be no worse than Williams or Jagielka and in most games will add much needed pace which is so badly lacking in our defence. It prevents us from playing higher up the pitch against lesser teams.

Don't expect RK to do this anytime soon though. Same with Kenny at RB. Given our lack of quality in these two area's at the moment I think the reward of playing these 2 together way outweigh the risks.

This has been my issue for years. I dont think the youngsters are all going to turn out world beaters but my argument has always been they will do just a good job as the experienced players taking their place and with time on their side will only get better. Holgate v Williams, Kenny V Martina, Robles (at the time) v Howard. I would love to know the thinking behind managers who make these choices

Loaning Pennington out to Leeds and Browning out to S'land looks a tad foolish now but no-one has a crystal ball. He did make an error yesterday when they scored, but so did Cuco, Baines (slips) and tubby Williams lets it go between his legs. Not saying he is to /'blame' where was Gana? but lets not pretend it wasnt one of several errors that led to the goal.

Sick to death of slating players and the manager so WELL DONE HOLGATE!

He showed a very professional performance alongside 2 defenders who never.

Great in the air, confidence to move play up the pitch without just booting it plus pace pace pace.

A bright spark in defence, I just hope he keeps his place with Keane when he returns.
