Ok, so what sort of midfield setup could he play in? Who would he play alongside? What formation?

Who is going to receive the ball off the centre backs? Who is going to retain possession?
Who is going to win the ball back or keep shape? Who is going to match up against the physicality of Premier Leauge level midfielders?

Anyone can sign good players but you need to have a role in mind for them and know how they'll fit in with what you've got.

It's going to be hard to answer those questions when we don;t have a new manager and perhaps more importantly the candidates for a new manager are so varied.

I have only seen the youtube clips of the guy, but what I will say is he holds some of the fundamentals that make him quite adaptable to be able to play in the PL, in the way say a Vlasic doesn't in my view.

spot on.

Not seen him play nor checked the obligatory YouTube vid but it’s the type of signing I’d like us to go for - reasonable price for a young and hopefully hungry player before he’s had his breakthrough season and his price doubles

Ive seen him play (to much horror)...

@Timak Nailed it...hes a "promising" player.

For me, he needed another season in portugal and starting regular games before you can really judge him.

As with Tom Davies coming off the bench for us and getting the odd game when others are injured...hes had 14 games worth of league minutes last season (Davies had 16 games worth of minutes).

So hard to judge based on watching the odd match.

My guess is that for €18mil / £15.5mil Brands sees him as a squad player and is hoping he improves over the season.

Certainly not a signing I would have made...if it was me id have gone straight for Kamara (Marseille) for defensive midfield or Tchouameni from Monaco / Guimaraes from Lyon etc etc etc

With this and the Dumfries links it seems like were going for players that we are gambling will be good.

Id rather we just went for starters but perhaps we dont want to spend much money.

As posted by others, we still need a defensive midfielder...though im hoping with Nunes joining it means we move on Delph and Gomes....then it makes more sense.

Mate you keep bringing this up as if it's a statement on how good he is. Being a squad player for the Portugese champions is a bigger deal than being a squad player for 10th place Everton - who've played Davies out of necessity at times due to injuries.

Not a signing you'd have made on Football Manager no, cause this is real life and our scouts will have actually watched him play before and deemed him a good acquisition.

1: im not sure how me saying its hard to judge a player on 14 games worth of mins and saying hes their Davies in terme of game time equates to comparing their ability?

Im saying quite literally its hard to judge him as hes not had regular games.

2: I dont play computer games.

You seem desperate to twist my words into a negative simply because ive seen him and havent said hes world class.

So , just to be clear....

We want a bargain but unless we pay a big fee it isn't worth signing the player as he will probably be useless.

We want to bring in younger players but unless they are already established and experienced we don't want them as they will probably be useless.

We don't want to continue to pay big wages but anybody arriving for small wages will probably be useless.

We want a young but not too young player who has experience but not so much experience that they are too expensive but at the same time we need them to have experience
And finally we need them to be expensive and cheap as far as wages are concerned.

Not too much to ask.

You've constantly brought up comparisons to Davies every time based on nothing more than the amount of game time he's had, which is lazy. I'm sure you could make a decent assessment of Davies based on his game time this season.

How many times have you seen him play? You seem to have time to watch Sporting, Lyon, Monaco, Marseille, Ajax and PSV amongst other clubs (including a host of teams from Brazil, Italy and Germany too) to make definitive statements on all their players' ability.

"He's the definition of Sportings' Tom Davies" - direct quote from you.

Not sure about the player, but I would be weirdly reassured to know the club is moving on transfers for high potential players regardless of manager. Sounds like he's a midfielder who could play in various systems and would add mobility aside from Doucoure, so sign me up.

Signing a young talented midfielder but Benitez might be your manager.
