Messi

I do wonder how much the likes of Dembele, Griezman, Coutinho et al had their salaries inflated somewhat by the fact that Messi's own was so high though?

Probably, but of course if there is a justification for that money then Messi had delivered it.

Coutinho hadn’t, neither had Dembele before they signed those deals. Greizmann probably came closest having won the league (at Atleti) and winning the World Cup at least.

No, of course, and there is an argument that Messi generated a lot of money for the club commercially, but when you're paying huge money for players in transfer fees then they're going to look at what players at the club earn when making their own demands.

You are, but of course this is Bartomeu and his idiocy again.

He could easily have told those players that they’d be incentivised to do what Messi did if they wanted to get close to his pay; just playing in the same side as him would have attracted most footballers already.

Instead he was giving absurd pay rises to all and sundry as if playing for that club and winning things needed to be compensated more than just playing for a normal club (Coutinho trebled / quadrupled his wage didn’t he?).

No one should be paid that kind of money for kicking a bag of air around though. I am pro salary cap but the best players like Messi/Ronaldo can still go on to earn a hell of a lot more by starring in commercials and kit deals. This whole saga shows the drain on finances paying astronomical amounts to players and agents has to stop.

If the super league took off they would be paying billion pound contracts soon. Madness. FIFA do your job.

That is so true, and seems to have eluded the Scab clubs. There is not "too much" money in football; its appallingly managed at the top end (mainly). Real Madrid and Barcelona are run terribly, lobbing an extra £300m a season at them wont stop that happening.

My understanding is that because of Covid, the financial fair play stuff has seen last year and the year before merged into one, and the likes of PSG and City have been able to use their owners to offset the losses made during that time in a way more organically run clubs, like Barcelona, cannot, hence why City can spent a few hundred on Grealish and Kane.

Had a little look at PSG wage bill and if/when Messi signs plus Donnarumma/Ramos/Wijnaldrim who are not on the list it will go to about 5mil PER WEEK!!!

I dont know the ins and outs mate, but the wider point was that the ESL was dressed up as some whizz bang super league, when the reality was that RM, Barca, and Juventus were in a hole. Of their own making.

That is staggering and obscene, however, love how they have basically gone onto Football Manager for the position information.

Fifa are only interested in stopping anyone else catching them up, crazy world we live in. I am also pro salary cap, rugby league is probably the shining example, but the big six here and the other fat cats abroad, would never allow that.
