Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

That'd be great thanks.

It certainly was pointless slaughter and as usual it's the little people who suffer for politicians/Royals. 25yards wow crazy.
I think with WWII you can see a clear rationale for going to war because the threat was real and consequences were to some extent known, even then.

But with WWI, yes there was a threat towards other nations, but not to the same extent of the war a mere twenty-one years later.

Thats what I meant about Blackadder. Remember the scene when Gen Melchett brushed a load of toy soldiers off the table, and replaced them with a yard of turf?

Darling said "Is that to scale?" And the reply was "No, thats what we won" Or similar anyrate. Genius.

You certainly know your stuff Phil, I appreciate the knowledge, are you in history as a job or just really interested in it?

History isnt just about winners and losers. In a war way that is. Causation is the really interesting part to me. Thats why the oft repeated mantras of "learn from the past" and "history repeats itself" are so true.

What folk often get confused about is if one conflates a modern issue, (brexit/Trump) with Nazi persecution, brexit is compared to Nazism. It isnt, but the causations are pretty much the same. Same with Trump. Same with pretty much any serious riots.
Who has ever conflated Brexit with Nazi persecution? (besides you above). The causation of Nazi Germany and Brexit couldn't be more different.
I have read some wild stuff by remainers' against Brexit but the above takes the biscuit.

You clearly havnt read, or understood, the point I made mate.

I specifically said the events are totally unrelated, but the causations, in a historical sense, do share similarities. But this is a friendly supportive thread, so will leave it at that.

Both wars were a bloody mess and a disgrace, so many lives lost. I know a lot more about WW2 because of Hitler and the Nazis being hated but I never knew how WW1 started.

Franz Ferdinand was the catalyst and Austria-Hungary went to war with Serbia. So I always thought the Germans started WW1 but they never they just backed the Austrian-Hungarians.
I'm not sure whether you are an avid reader T but there is an absolutely brilliant trilogy of novels by the author Ken Follett. Collectively they are known as Century, and they are 3 books that cover WW1, WW2 and the aftermath of WW2 upto JFKs assassination. Whilst works of fiction there's a lot of historical fact within them. The books centre around generations of 4 families, Russian, British, German and American, and how they interact throughout the period. I learnt so much about modern history from those books that I didn't have a clue about beforehand. Well worth a read. I'd love somebody to make a TV series of them. A film wouldn't do them justice.

I read and understood the words you posted. I am prepared to accept that you could have expressed it better.

2:08. "What's the actual scale, Darling?"

"Errrmm 1:1, Sir. Life sized... 17sq ft, Sir."

"Excellent There you see, young Blackadder didn't die horribly in vain at all."

You certainly know your stuff Phil, I appreciate the knowledge, are you in history as a job or just really interested in it?
Nothing more than a real interest and what I did my degree in. I'd more than love to do it as my job.

I think Darling's speech when he ends up in the trench with Blackadder is one of the most moving pieces of writing ever. How he wanted to marry Doris, keep wicket for the Croydon gentlemen. Amazing writing.

The Russian, German and British Royal heads were actually first cousins. All grandchildren of Queen Victoria. Shocking how that war broke out.
Tsarist Russia was the closest to an absolute monarchy and was ran by Nicholas, but German and Britain (even more so) were mainly led by others.

In German, you have Hollweg and the Prussian Generals ruling the roost in most ways, while Britain had its own. Only their egos and jingoism helped fuel it.

You also had all the Pals regiments where groups of people joined up together with the promise that they could serve alongside their friends/ neighbours/ workmates. Sometimes all the men in a village would join up or from a specific work place including football clubs. The casualties amongst them were horrific. Imagine the local devastation when hardly any of them came back.
I was going to mention this so glad I read on before i did. Some rural villages were effectively cleaned of young men. When travelling Cal and I used to love visiting old churches and there were very often WWI memorials listing the names of the dead from that parish, because in most cases the bodies were never returned. Very sad.
