Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

I watched something about WW2 in the Pacific. I realised I knew hardly anything about it.
Both wars were a bloody mess and a disgrace, so many lives lost. I know a lot more about WW2 because of Hitler and the Nazis being hated but I never knew how WW1 started.

Franz Ferdinand was the catalyst and Austria-Hungary went to war with Serbia. So I always thought the Germans started WW1 but they never they just backed the Austrian-Hungarians.

So much we don't know about the main events in history ,why is that ? Are we taught with a bias or are we not taught properly at all ? Or are we simply not interested as kids ?
I often look back and think about the way we were taught ,of course I was caned almost every day .I don't know whether I have posted this before ( One of the benefits of getting old ) but I had a P.E. teacher who used an old pump sole ( the footwear kind ) and another who used a length of rubber bunsen burner hose with a knot tied at the end ---to teach me a lesson .

The various European royal families all had pacts and agreements arranged, apparently. Ferdinand was the catalyst for them to kick in.

We only ever get to hear history from the side of the victors don't we. As a kid I wasn't interested as an adult, I love learning about history.

I stopped doing history in about 3rd year at school when we had to make our O Level choices. As far as WW2 goes I think the teaching focus was mostly about the European war and not the Pacific. Having said that I also knew nothing about the battles in Italy and how the soldiers who fought there were shamefully referred to as D Day dodgers. I only discovered that when I heard a song about it.

Teachers were wicked back in the day. Have to say our nuns were lovely- in spite of the knicker inspections! So far from the stereotype of cruel nuns. They were happy clappy nuns with guitars. My brothers went to a school run by Christian Brothers who used to give them the strap. My poor Dad was educated by Jesuits and they were awful to them. He was only 5 ( in your era @Methuselah ) and used to get the cane. How naughty can a 5 year old be to deserve that.

History isnt just about winners and losers. In a war way that is. Causation is the really interesting part to me. Thats why the oft repeated mantras of "learn from the past" and "history repeats itself" are so true.

What folk often get confused about is if one conflates a modern issue, (brexit/Trump) with Nazi persecution, brexit is compared to Nazism. It isnt, but the causations are pretty much the same. Same with Trump. Same with pretty much any serious riots.

Never really thought about it like that, an interesting angle and makes you wonder why we don't learn. The difference now is nuclear deterrent not because we all get along.
