This is interesting and could help us in a change in direction, looking at what you're all debating about a renewal or not.

I agree that if we want to promote new levels of achievement and effort, we have to award new contracts more carefully, to certain age groups.

Under 25s with potential we have to secure and probably because they have more options, we might have to reward and renegotiate early
Over 25s only if they're a great fit, indispensible or on an upward curve

In the past few years renewals to Mirallas and others have really left us so confused, unless they were to somehow increase their resale value?!

In the case of Keane, I want him to be better, show his potential and be a consistent, solid performer. It's also worth noting that he must have developed a good relationship with Mina and Holgate in the last 2 years, even if they haven't played well and played a lot together - its hard to integrate a central defender easily. So I would rather keep him cos I can't see £25m buying anyone similar. However, he has shown one half season of solid improvement. So I would tell him - show this again for another 6 months and we'll renegotiate and consider an extension.

That would be great to try and change the approach of automatic, large contracts and generous renewals.

It's tough though, even Man City, Liverpool, even the other CL clubs around Europe are to an extent held to ransom by the players and agents, so at our current level, players don't have to wait for us. Just wish we could create an ethic that you only get good contracts if you work hard and improve.

I don't think I would get through the season without aneurysm if I keep seeing him pick the ball up off Pickford on the 6 yard line

Gabriel is looking to be going to Arsenal for circa €27mil which is about the same youre rating £25mil Keane at.

There are also plenty of centre backs in France and elsewhere we would be able to snap up for that or less.

As to the relationship he may have developed with Mina and Holgate it doesnt seem to show on the pitch and i havent seen "half a seasons improvement" hes been the exact same player who cant play anywhere but in a deep defence. Also a concern is him playing out from the back as Ancelotti favours.

It smacks to me of rewarding failure. Also very poor DOF decision making if true

The question is; do you think Michael Keane deserves to be paid more money for what he’s done thus far and what he does for the team? I know what I think.

Probably not. But say he gets a £20k p/w pay rise, if the new contract adds just £1m on to any transfer fee we get for him next year then we’ll recoup those additional wages.

Yeah but you can say that about every player we have, the real question is can we find a better defender then him and Mina and how much will that cost, we could shift Keane and buy another like for like player and waste millions, like we did on Mina.
Keane has little ££ value, selling him from a business side of things wont work, we still have to play 2 center backs, right now we only really have one in Mason who is good enough, everyone else is back up.
As for a new contract there is no saying the wages will go up, chances are they wont, they could go down and it be his best offer.

Don't see any reason why he should be getting a pay rise or an extended contract. He still has a contract with us until 2022(?); last thing we need is the Club to go into a panicky knee-jerk reaction to stop him moving on... it's not like he's a mordern day Franz Beckenbauer ffs.

OK, but to get him to move rather than run down the contract we would have to convince someone to absorb his current wage plus the extra 20k pounds per week.

In a COVID environment, that is likely to be a tough ask.

Whether we agree with a new contract or not when a player gets to within two years of his contract end you either give him a new contract so he's worth more if you sell him, sell him now with two years on his contract or let him run it down and go for nothing. I would class it as bring proactive negotiating a new contract and if he is asking for too much we make him available, unfortunately if there are no takers he stays and goes for nothing at the end of his contract.

Load of tosh that feller.

You want to reward a terrible player with a higher wage packet just incase some stupid club actually bids for him?

He's not going to Barcalona, he's a bottom half premiership player. We should accept any half decent bid we receive for him.

but why should he get a pay rise at all? if we want to give him a new contract it should reflect his performances and be a reduced wage.

I’m not saying we should give him a payrise, I’m just playing devils advocate.

He’s not “terrible” though let’s be honest, that’s pure hyperbole.
