Quite interested in that idea though, do they inherit contracts in US sports when players are traded?

Yes, in the big leagues over here (NFL, NBA, MLB), when you trade for a player, you're trading for his contract. That's why you see a lot of deals where overpriced players are traded for "cash considerations" and future draft picks.

Generally yes. Our leagues are salary capped (except baseball), so a lot of times trades are all about making the puzzle fit with the contracts involved. However, if someone is traded and they are in the last year of their deal, usually the expectation is that the player renegotiate a new deal with the new team...if they are a star player that is.

Cheers cheese.

Sorry, I'm American, apologies if my question was not clear. When we buy him, do we negotiate a contract extension with him, or does he come to Everton with his current contract that ends next summer and then he's free to leave?
The reason people say he should be cheaper isn't that we inherit a player that will be out of contract in a year, it's that Burnley know he can move for free next year. It's that THEY are in a weak negotiating position. This is the reason Barkley is being sold (given the ultimatum) now. If we keep him, we'll get nothing for him next summer.
