2017/18 Michael Keane

Jagielka coming out today and saying what we all know, Keane isn't a leader in the back and has to become one.

I play center back and I absolutely hate playing next to someone who doesn't talk. It means you will make mistakes. I'm horrified that we signed off on spending 30 million on someone who doesn't have the confidence within themselves to be vocal in a position that absolutely demands it.

Michael Keane has been told to become a "boss at the back" by Everton team-mate Phil Jagielka after being left out of the England squad.

James Tarkowski, who stepped into Keane's boots at Burnley when he left for Everton in the summer, has been called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad instead.

Keane, 25, has only seven games left to convince Southgate he deserves a place in the squad for the World Cup, and Jagielka has urged his colleague to become a more commanding presence for Everton.

"He is quite a quiet lad and I have openly said, 'Shout at me, shout at someone else, no one is taking anything personally, we need to know where everyone is', and I think that is something he has in him," Jagielka told Everton's official website.

"At the start of his career here we had a few difficult periods so it was probably natural to go into your shell a little bit. But I am encouraging him to be himself and be a boss at the back - whether you are a loud person on or off the pitch, when you are on the pitch you need to pass on information."

Former Manchester United defender Keane has taken time to settle at Everton, but has started the last seven games under Sam Allardyce.

Jagielka believes Keane is now becoming a permanent fixture in the starting line-up.

"I probably had six months where I did not play much (after joining) and Leighton Baines was similar," said Jagielka. "The good thing about us back then was that it was a settled team.

"Times have changed and it is a little bit different, but not having too many changes in the team does help people settle in and, hopefully, that will be the case until the end of the season. You can see Michael's confidence is coming back, so these games will put him in good stead going forward."

keane is young and has had a lot of pressure on his shoulders this season in a terrible everton. injuries to funes mori, jags along with baines and coleman. hope he can respond well and improve because he has talent and potential. mobile, good with ball at feet. needs to toughen up, maybe an extra kilo or 2. work on his positioning and as jags said communicate, lead

Keane is what, 24? How long do you think he's been playing that position? He's a professional at the top level for Christ's sake.

He's old enough now to know that he has to be vocal in the defensive unit because they work as a team unto themselves.

He's had no more pressure on his shoulders than anybody else in the team, and again say it with me now, he's a professional football player.

I'm not impressed at all, a 24 year old professional center back should be capable of communicating in a team and we should not be talking about potential when he's that age.

yes have to agree with you. needs to improve in areas significantly during the remainder of season. i believe he can as he has shown this in the past

Jags is grooming him to be a leader, I don't mind that. Anyone remember how pony Jags was back at the start?

...but I fear you can’t make a slow defender fast and I fear you can’t make an immobile footballer mobile. If he is in the team we will have to defend deep, anything played behind him or down the channels will leave us wide open. The team would have to be set up to cover his frailties, in a similar way that Burnley did last season.
