Middlesbrough Everton 1988 FA Cup

This was the same season we went 4 games with Sheff Wed before winning 5-0 in the 3rd replay. We'd played 7 games in the cup by that point in the season and it was only the 4th round!

Ratcliffe suffered a bad injury in the first FA Cup tie at Hillsborough on 9th January that year, hence Psycho playing centre back a fair bit. I don't think Rats was ever the same player after that injury, he had been in superb form.
As for the Boro replays, it was the 2nd replay back at Goodison when it was very very wind. Much worse than that time we had a game postponed vs Palace in 2014.

I can't for the life of me work out the formation Harvey was playing. I'm assuming it's this, but it still looks very unbalanced with Pointon on the left wing, Snods centre back and where was Harper playing?

Any thoughts?

I’d be certain Snodin wasn’t CB. I’d guess VdH was CB with Pointon LB.

Snodin 100% centre midfield with Reid. Pointon LB. VDH centre half.
Snodin went on to play right back a season or two later and i thought he was really good but he was another injuries took their toll on him.
Some great cup games back then. Boro. Sheff weds. And the cup games against Royles Oldham were brilliant. Remember being at boundary park. Freezing. That awful plastic pitch. Royle built such a tough side to beat. great away days. Loved em.

What a fantastic header by Trevor Steven deep into stoppage time to keep us in the cup that night. Got up early and just managed to steer it into the corner and sweet seeing the gutted Boro faces who thought they were just about to celebrate an unlikely win. Steven was always great in the air for a winger.

Listening to the commentary again Brian Moore was clearly gutted we'd scored.

We played more FA Cup ties in 87/88 in just reaching the 5th round than we did when we won the damn thing in 1995.
