The decline accelerated under Colin. I say "accelerated" because I think we were actually in decline the year we won the title for a second time - one of the great title wins given the unbelievable injuries we suffered that season.Maybe Heath covering left side and then supporting Sharp in attack. 451 off the ball and 442 in attack?
I have a lot of respect and admiration for Colin, I do think if we are to be honest, we bought some players who were not good enough replacements for the ones leaving and had been successful.
It probably played a part in the rot that started to set in once the Premier League started a few years later
Argh, I was looking at the third game back at home.Paul Power didn't play.
You are correct. Highlights here. If you watch the kick off, you can see Trevor Steven at left midfield.Southall
Pointon (LB) - VDH - Watson - Stevens (RB)
Steven (LW) - Snodin - Reid - Harper (RW)
Heath - Sharp
I doubt Kendall would have been as successful as he was without him bringing Colin Harvey in as his assistant coach the first time round! The decline accelerated under Colin. We didn't strengthen adequately when he took over, and seemed to wait a full year before backing him properly - and then he spent badly.
I think the seeds of our decline were already planted, but he couldn't arrest it. From a perception perspective, his biggest mistake was probably coming back again as Kendall's number two straight after being sacked. It gave the impression he was never a manager and his time in charge was an aberration. Maybe he wasn't, and maybe it was. It said a lot for the man, though, in that he was humble enough to do that and return to what he was truly great as: coach.
It was probably meI got there on time - some lads getting in at HT asked "Any score ?"
Me: "5-0 to us"
Lads: "F#*k Off" whilst laughing at what they think is me being sarcastic.
Me: [Points to scoreboard]
Correct we didn’t strengthen, Liverpool I think signed Barnes, Beardsley, Houghtin and Aldridge who all clicked straightaway. The next season we signed Neil McDonald , McCall? , Cottee and Pat Nevin? who all underwhelmed to put it mildly. Every signing later was almost pure sh1te , Rehn, Attaveld, Mike Milligan to name a few.The decline accelerated under Colin. That night was absolutely one you don’t forget and certainly character building . The lads I was with headed outside early and we didn’t know he’d scored . I had no idea why they were so angry and my god they were angry !I went 'kin mental when Tricky equalised, some bifters going on outside with the Smoggies that night
A lot of talk of a real split between the old guard and the new . the older players furious that new signings who’d achieved nothing had landed on big money .The decline accelerated under Colin. They left us in the dust in the summer of 87. They signed brilliant players. We signed very ordinary ones. Many factors could possibly account for the decline. The europe ban.
But we also just never recruited like for like quality. Neil Mcdonald for Gary stevens. Stuart Mcall for Peter Reid. Pat nevin for Trevor Steven. The title winning players were slowly going out the door and we wasnt replacing with the same quality. As much as i dislike to admit it those over the park recruited better the year we were Champions with the likes of john barnes, beardsley, ray houghton etc. We never.
